Well a couple of weeks ago I read The Widows Story, the authors memoir about the sudden loss of her husband and how she then became transformed into a widow. It mentioned this book, and I thought I would be brave and search it out, as it was a story based on one of her grandmothers lives. So bravery was what I needed to start this monster of a book, as my recent encounters with large books (500 pages +) haven't been too promising. So in this book, we follow the story of Rebecca Swartz, who in the first third is growing up grim, with a depressing home environment, with violent brothers and a disturbed set of immigrant parents. who have escaped from early Nazi Germany. In her teenage years, she finds herself alone, and Rebecca then finds herself with a boyfriend who then becomes obsessive and violent in the second third of the book, and she looks for ways to escape with their young son. The final part of the book is then her new life, and the time she spends making a new future. In all I found it 400 pages of grim and adepressing life, with the final fifty pages actually being the best part of the book. For me, if it had been half the size and therefore twice as good, but what do I know?

Very nice book detailing when a child's brain is best suited to learning different subjects, and what you can do to encourage growth in those areas.

Horne writes a brilliant history of Algeria's struggle for independence. His well-documented research records how France tried to hold on to its empire, and how its traditions and institutions were betrayed by ideology and evil. More ominous are the telling parallels between this war and the current situation in the Middle East -- mutato nomine: change the names of "France" and "Algeria" to "United States" and "Iraq," and Horne's work could have been written yesterday.

Moore's first book. He is still finding his voice here, and I did not find it as laugh out loud funny as some of his later work. But it's a nice introduction to some of the residents of Pine Cove, and worth reading if you are a Moore fan. If you aren't (yet), I would recommend starting with Bloodsucking Fiends, or Lust Lizard of Melancholy cove.

It was a really good read, but the last 4 or 5 chapters started to drag on a bit! It was just taking too darn long!

I can't say for sure why I loved Sloane Crosley's book and did not enjoy this one at all. In many ways, they are the same book. I guess I just felt like Sedaris had no qualms about lying to my face. Every over-the-top tale in this collection, seemed so bogus and synthetic that I just could not relate. Even if I accepted his book as pure fiction, it just couldn't hold my interest for more than a few pages at a time.

I really enjoy Felicity Heaton's Vampires Realm series. The characters tend to be the type that you can get into their heads and feel what they're feeling. The vampire bloodlines are interesting and different enough that you don't feel like you're retreading old ground with every book. The bad guys tend to be bad. And that's exactly what I'm looking for. Here we have a two strong warriors who have been torn apart by some stupid mistakes and a lack of communication. Or maybe it's a lack of wanting to listen as opposed to a lack of wanting to talk. Does that even make sense? Maybe I need more coffee before I can form coherent sentences. Maybe I can never form coherent sentences. That's okay. I accept myself as I am. Anyway. Two warriors, lots of angst. In the fifty years they've been apart they haven't been able to forget one another but they're both tied up in knots and the emotional iceberg that is Marise is having a hard time unthawing. There's blood and fighting and sexy times. There are even some heartfelt moments with the sibling of the ex-lover. All in all, it was a fun, fast, free read. I like that. -Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal

I read this to my children but I like they, skipped over the allegorical Christian message in the story. I treated it as if it was just a great fantasy aimed at children. One day I'll go back and re-read all of the Narnia books, but I'll probably still try to ignore the Christian allegory.
