I thought this would be a great picture book for my Holocaust unit (supplement to Anne Frank, or to use for their WWII research papers), but the writing was nothing remarkable, and I wasn't even moved as much as the story should have moved me. It seemed incomplete, rough, and a little fragmented. It left me with many questions and utterly unsatisfied. I did learn about aspects of the Holocaust that I hadn't known before (minimal), but not enough to suggest that my students read the whole thing when there are better books that cover the same topics. I feel really bad, as always, criticizing a memoir that expresses pain or recounts a traumatic experience, but I just wasn't brought into the character's feelings and experiences in a way that was transformative. Sorry. :(

I bought this book and did like it but found myself forcing my hand to turn the page it's a alright book but not my cup of tea and more Manley young adults would enjoy this but story line is good so would recommend it but to more action adventure boys or even girls.

This book is, to me, a book which carries a thousand of memories with it. It's intruiging, fascinating, but dangerous.

I enjoyed this infinitely more than the mortal instruments series and can't wait to read the next two. Although to be fair I really liked the first three mortal instruments when they were intended to be a trilogy and now that it's an on going series it just isn't very good anymore and I probably won't read the rest of them (I've read the first four so far) unless I'm extremely bored and/or don't have anything else left to read.

Sort of boring but i think that it will be alright after im done!
Such a great book. I loved the use of language. It's slow moving but that adds to the suspense. Great character development. Yep, I still suck at writing reviews but I thoroughly enjoyed this.
i'm torn. beautiful at times. i do love her writing, but this didn't really work for me. often found myself more irritated and frustrated with it than moved. if you've read david vann's caribou island, this covers similar territory. the bleak, protracted disintegration of a marriage. more thoughts later. maybe.

Surprisingly wise and positive take on the state of the social sciences from an outsider.

First book by this author and what I read about it intrigued me; however, it is just too dark to recommend to any of my friends. Nothing good happens. I really hope the author has not based this on anyone's real life because it would be very sad to live this way. I did understand and felt close to Darlene when she was watching over her children in their beds at night- worrying, hoping and praying that they would be OK. I would probably read another book of hers if she writes one that sounds interesting to me.

As this book was the first science fiction book i've read in a very long time, it was difficult to get into. However, as i continued reading, it was less science fiction in that there is not any focus on gadgetry and the future of man's capabilities. It is rather a focus on atmosphere and expanding the reader's imaginative scope. A beautiful old world of Malacandra (Mars) is depicted in a way that seems to sanctify this place where the spiritual is not severed from the material. The ending was especially wonderful because the encounter with the spiritual became real to the human from earth.
