This book was quite a boring read. It didn't help that the blurb on the back claims that America and his American woman 'betrayed' him, which left me expecting something to happen. Instead, he decided he couldn't live in America anymore because of his loyalty to his country and dislike of American politics and so on. I'm not against that as such, it is just not what I was led to believe the book was about and I was therefore disappointed. Changez smiles when the twin towers go down. I understand that he may feel a similar hatred for American politics (but it seems odd if he does because he has chosen to live in America and accept all the benefits that come with it). I understand that he may relate in some way to the terrorists. I do not understand why he would take pleasure in the death and suffering of so many people. He says he was caught up in the symbolism rather than the actual event but that still portrays him as heartless. This passage demonstrated to me how cold he is: I am not indifferent to the suffering of others. When I hear of an acquitance who has been diagnosed with a serious illness, I feel - almost without fail - a sympathetic pain, a twinge in my kidneys strong enough to elicit a wince. When I am approached for a donation to charity, I tend to be forthcoming, at least insofar as my modest means will permit. So when I tell you I was pleased at the slaughter of thousands of innocents, I do so with a profound sense of perplexity I cannot see how Hamid (if he intended to) can create sympathy for a character like this. He certainly wasn't betrayed by Erica - he knew she loved someone else right from the beginning but got involved anyway! There is quite a disturbing sex scene, in which he pretends to be Chris, her dead ex boyfriend, in order to get her into bed. He claims to love her but doesn't seem to have much sympathy for her illness. She told him over and over again that getting involved with each other would be a bad idea - for both of them, but he ignores this. The book seems like one long moan. Rather than being concerned with the politics or social situation, Changez merely seems bitter about losing his fantastic, well paid job and his new life. What bothers me even more about this is that he CHOSE to leave! I realise 9/11 changed his life dramatically but his company were practically begging him to stay. The concept of the book was a good one, it could have said and done a lot more than it actually did. I would have helped if the narrator wasn't so utterly dislikable.

Good page turner, enjoyed the books different narrators...made me think how wonderfully far we've come, but then I wondered if that might not be true in some places still. Just saw the movie too and enjoyed it - good casting.

This is a highly enjoyable urban fantasy that has just about everything in it: sensuality, action, werewolves, magic, drama, murder, humor, and more! I know there are teens out there who are just obsessed with this series, and I can see why. Must read the 2nd and 3rd books in this trilogy soon! My 4 stars should probably be 4 1/2...not my favorite book ever but very good!

Set in South Africa and told through the eyes of a little white girl. The backdrop of the story is set in times before and after apartheid, but it concentrates on ordinary relationships between black and white people. Because it’s told through a child’s point of view, the language can be playful (and for this reason sometimes annoying). But more often, descriptions are thorough and comment on the social dynamics of that period. There are better novels out there about apartheid issues.

Romance. The Goodnight family's been bent for four centuries, but Tilda Goodnight's going straight, as soon as she steals a forged painting and makes out with the con man she meets while hiding in the closet. This was the second time I read this, and I liked it even more this time around. Crusie's plots are a little formulaic -- there is a stray dog in every book and usually a murder -- but her writing's vivid and funny, her characters are imperfect and likable, and the sex is generally hot and free of romance novel cliches. But this isn't just a romance. Tilda's family -- and all of their problems -- play a big part in the book, along with a cast of enjoyable supporting characters with all of their accompanying subplots. This is a novel with con jobs, art forgery, the FBI, a dachshund named Steve, and a couple who actually have some bad sex before they know each other well enough to have the good stuff. Five stars. I like all of Crusie's novels, but this is my favorite.
The Tamuli was where I hopped off the Eddings train. It just got to be too much. There are still pleasures to be had from these books, although at close to 30 books (counting the Belgariad and Malloreon whose characters are just barely distinguishable from the ones here) these characters are starting to wear out their welcome just a bit by now. But they are still good company. And Eddings' dialogue, though getting just a tad stale by now, is still amusing. Somewhat atypically for a fantasy author it's the scenes between the fights and between the traditional "action" that are really the best. Eddings "action" never really has much tension because his protagonists are never even afraid themselves, they're never worried that they might lose. And it's just tiresome. The main question in these books is always just FINDING the enemy so that they can smash him. There's always trickery, trickery, trickery so that they don't know whose neck to snap. Then when they get to the bottom of it in the last book of the series and know where to go, they just go and kill everyone that needs killing. There just isn't that much at stake in these books.

young, earnest author on Biafra. A humane story about the most inhumane of wars.

Read this with classes. Not a very riveting version, but still a good story. I appreciate that the students never complained about the story itself, which is saying something.
