Clearly written by a mystic, this is one of the most magical novels I've ever read. DeLint's writing is a delight as well as the way he weaves a wealth of knowledge about music into the story. I'm a big fan of Celtic music and it's hard to read this book without hearing a ghostly reel playing in a far off corner of one's mind. Highly recommended. I've already begun sending copies to friends. And, oh goody, look - this author has a deep bibliography!

Lowry witnesses the cruel whipping of slaves and is ashamed that he did nothing to assist the abused. He makes a vow to God that he will become an abolitionist minister like his father and others that he respects. He comes face to face with many who are pro-slavery and who will stop at nothing to put a stop to abolition. While this book mentions "young readers" on the back, it is perhaps more appropriate for youth who are a little more mature. I won't even venture an age. Given credence to this novel is that it is based on history, upping this reader's interest.

mindless, gossipy entertainment. I didn't really like this book all that much, but it was a quick read on an airplane (and helped keep the yapper next to me from talking the entire 5 hours). The writing was pretty poorly done - too cookie-cutter, like Noble took a class on how to write a romantic comedy novel and this was her first complete novel. ugh. wouldn't recommend to any of my goodreads friends.

The melodrama has to stop, people. Yes, being a teenager is hard; yes, it's harder when there are emotional issues in the mix. But I just can't deal with characters that fade into the background of their own stories. If you're writing in the first person, we should get a better sense of the narrator.
