This is such a tender story and reminds of the love my parents have for each other! Nicholas Sparks is great at weaving tender love stories.

Even though I haven't read the first book (Gut gegen Nordwind) I loved it and read it within 4 hours. Great language.

The author writes about her time spent on a Chinese boat from Shanghai to Galveston, Texas as an English teacher in 1991. Since it was so long ago, maybe she had to rely on her journals, so there was some depth missing in her stories. Some of the book touches on her confusion about her sexuality. She leaves behind a long-term boyfriend to go on this voyage, but during this journey she questions whether she wants to remain with the boyfriend or not, and her longing for a relationship with a woman. This book was interesting but closer to average than outstanding.

This is a really wonderful book on many levels. A fabulous history lesson and a beautiful, funny, and powerful story.

Problematic. Englander is an adept, even-handed writer, but not an amazing stylist; worse, I never believed that the story was set in Argentina at all (it would have been better as a Kafka-esque "no place"), and I didn't find it as engaging as I would have hoped. But a good effort nonetheless. Upon rereading, I was struck by many of the scenes but underwhelmed by the lack of cohesion - the whole was less than the sum of its parts.

Love, love love Ramona even if she seems like apest. she a typical kid. Every family has one like Romona and can relate to the characters antics. This is an enjoyable book, as are all of Cleary's Romona books, to share with your grade schoolers.I enjoy reading it o over and over , now with the grand kids.

What would I do in this man's situation? That's how I felt reading this and my answer? Ok in truth I'd have shit my pants and died early on. But let's pretend I'm not a big girls blouse and have some sort of survival instinct. I'd build a little fortress, Stock up on food, booze and fags and whatever weapons and tools I could get my hands on and I'd keep the bastards out night after night after night trying to ignore the torments of these undeadish virus ridden motherfuckers, and in the day I'd slaughter everyone I could find in their fithy hideyholes. I'd go a bit mad then I'd pull myself together and try to come up with a solution and study them cause I'm really quite clever(Whilt still fighting and being a bit mad). Amongst other things that's what the protagonist in this story does. but he hangs on to hope even though there isn't really any. What a guy, and for the couple of days reading this book. I was that guy, I am legend, and I'm shitting my pants. The last remaining human. Could have been worse, could have been me. I am legend.

Such a shame. His first book was almost perfect: funny and playful, haunting and beautiful. It made me re-read my Grandad's memoirs (he came from prewar Poland) over and over again. But this one is awful: The Tin Drum without the experience, wit or characters, pandering instead to the people who need to be tucked in at night with a children's story to feel safe after a catastrophe in New York that had nothing to do with them. Almost as bad as Dave Eggers' cloying crap.

This was my favorite book as a small child. I would check it out of the library over and over again for weeks on end. Explains a lot, doesn't it?
