After a VERY slow start, I actually ended up enjoying this book. I am going to read the second book in the series to see if that one is better.
I love that The Laughing Corpse is a vampire comedy club. Hilarious!

Another book about the Christian (called "the Hidden" in this book) persecution in Japan [see Silence by Endo:] but from a slightly fanciful perspective rather than historical fiction. Much of the setting is accurate to that time period in Japanese history. It is an enjoyable read.
At times I found myself skimming over some of the descriptions of the under water world - but I did find myself wondering what would happen. And then, tired, I sink under my covers just like the Nautilis going under the water.

awesome book, sets the foundation for theorizing urban planning as a scholarly and practical field.
I loved this book. It is not for everyone. Some of the chapters were not as funny as others. As a cat lover, I really did not like the Anti-cat chapter. Did that make me want to burn the book and the great dennis leary? No. I knew he was trying to be funny. His autism chapter was taken way out of context on a radio and tv shows and people blew it way out of proportion. The chapter is not the funniest chapter in the book. But the book itself is very funny and will be loved by those who like his comedy and his television show, Rescue Me. The writing is very similar to Leary's writing on his hit FX show. Read with caution and a good sense of humor. But as an american living a foreign country this book made me want to move back home with fat, lazy and stupid people.

This is a book that has it all: unbridled imagination, devastating black humor, breathtaking suspense, romantic poetry and even unyielding social commentary. It's a classic attack on the Soviet system, but it goes beyond and takes a hard, uncompromising look at the human condition. It has survived the collapse of the Soviet Union and will certainly go on to enter the Russian pantheon of classics, along with Tolstoy, Gogol and Dostoievsky. A must read!
I finished this book on the train from O'Hare to Union Station. I cried on the subway. Interesting character development and the resolutions were not easy.

Not all mysteries are worth rereading very often -- something about the recitation of the details of the crime makes repetition tiresome. This book is a solid novel-with-a-mystery, as opposed to a whodunit (a worthy genre in its own right). Sayers tones down the degree of Wimsey (her detective-hero) in order to focus on the professional and personal dilemmas of Vane (her mystery-writing alter ego), and the result is a satisfying work that's worth revisiting for its discussions about priorities among the unbalancing demands of the personal and professional. Some of the themes about women's work and its place may strike readers as dated, but as long as there are people in the world (women included) who fear that professional women are, in some sense, out of place, these themes will have some direct, as well as historical relevance. One of my favorite novels.

What an eye opening book. Learned a lot about budgeting and how to cut costs while still living a great life.
