"It seems to me that there are two strains of literature currently in vogue - what I have referred to...as recherché postmodernism and recidivist realism - and both of them, in my opinion, suck," writes Dale Peck. "As one reads contemporary novelists, one can't shake the feeling that they write for one another rather than some more or less common reader. Their prose shares a showiness that speaks of solidarity and competition..." I certainly don't disagree with his conclusions that much of current fiction is highly undesirable, but B.R. Myers in A Reader's Manifesto: An Attack on the Growing Pretentiousness in American Literary Prose explained it better and more coherently.

I've heard this book is amazing - so I'm curious to see for myself!

I enjoyed this book much more than I was expecting to based on the narrator's character/personality in the first book. It was semi-predictable, with a few surprises to keep it from being too cliche. Overall a good, easy, read.

I really enjoyed this although I'm not sure that I buy the ending. I'm not even sure what other kind of ending I would've liked to have seen, but that's the only reason it got 4 instead of 5.

Sort of like the Yellow-Lighted Bookshop but told from a rat's POV. http://pussreboots.pair.com/blog/2015...

I read this because I am fascinated by the lack of adolescent literature featuring vegan/vegetarian protagonists, and I have to say I was a little disappointed. The story was okay - nothing groundbreaking, but I was more annoyed that veganism was treated as a "phase" that is synonymous with the need for control over one's life and a rigidity that is emotionally unhealthy. I didn't hate the book, but as someone who has been veggie since the seventh grade, I felt it was just another mainstream misinterpretation of teenage rebellion.

I loved reading this and discussing her ideas with Matt as I was reading them. The idea that tolerance can have negative effects is interesting, especially when it leads to allowing things we all agree are wrong to occur in our midst (like murder). The part of the book where Ayaan discusses the Dutch people's refusal to see that 'honor killings' and female circumcisions were taking place in their country simply because they wanted to be tolerant of a different cultural/religious view was a real eye-opener for me. I don't know enough about Islam to know how violent or non-violent it inherently is, in its purest form, but I do know that it's ridiculous to allow murder in the name of freedom. All in all, this was a very engaging and thought-provoking read. Themes: Islam, Africa and the Middle East, women, tolerance, violence, history, political upheaval, family, tribe/clan identity

Le coeur serré et une larme en coin d'oeil. Magnifique.
This book provides short essays, roughly 3-5 pages from various people across the country. Each of them writes about their jobs. Each essay is not only different in its author and their profession, but also in what they choose to write on. Some focus on what they do day to day while others focus on the strengths and weaknesses of their job, how they got there, etc. Some of the people hold positions of people that we have interacted with a lot in our lives but probably didn't stop to think about what their career may be like, such as a Wal*Mart Greeter, UPS man, college professor, etc. A good book so far that is providing me with perspective on my own job and also providing a good perspective on how we all treat work differently, some as merely something to make money and others as life itself.
If you think you cannot relate to an East Texas oilman in his 50's (or something), you're wrong. Also, Larry McMurtry writes the best women out of anybody.
