This book underscores why Peter Singer is the most influential philosopher living today. He takes his utilitarianism very seriously, and the implications of this philosophy, if followed, would radically change our world for the better. In this book, Singer lays out the case for why those of us in affluent nations should be giving to charity to help the poor worldwide. What is actually most surprising to me is the final section in which he lays out the numbers: if the richest 10% of those in the US (and the equally wealthy worldwide) would give at higher levels than they do now but at levels that do not adversely affect their lifestyles, we could effectively end world poverty. Still, the burden should not fall on the richest 10% alone: most of us not in the top 10% of America's wealthiest (those of us earning less than $102,000 annually) could still easily give far more than we do by simply giving up some of our more frivolous spending. This book provides an excellent case for being more generous and eschewing the oft touted American individualism (what I would actually call selfishness: for a literary example of this selfishness-as-a-virtue, see Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged); rather than looking out only for ourselves, we should be looking to help those less fortunate than us, and Singer's arguments here provide the basic moral and practical reasons for such altruism.

Maggie is an attractive 60 year old women, a former Miss Alabama who left her high school boyfriend in hopes of adventure in New York City. When she doesn't find what she wanted in NYC, she returns to her home town to become a very successful real estate agent selling some of the finer mansions of Birmingham, Alabama. She has friends, plenty of money and basically a good life. For some unknown reason she sets out to commit suicide. The author never does explain this. I could only believe it was because she lived in the past and thought just because she was beauty contest material anymore, her life wasn't worth living. Hogwash, as they would say in Alabama, she had a better life than a lot of people in Birmingham, I'm sure. She methodically plans and plots her demise, right down to the last detail but every time she tries to move ahead with it something happens to make her post pone it. Maggie, in my opninion is a narcissitic, boring female. The story is depressing and lacking in the wonderful southern charm that Flannie Flagg is famous for. This is no Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe , ladies!

Fun book about 13 year-olds coming into their special magic ("savvy") and learning about themselves while they learn to control it. Sequel to Savvy.

I visited South Africa in 1997 and what impressed me the most was the dignity of the people and their hope for a better future. This book speaks to that dignity and sense of hope. To be able to see your oppressor as a human takes a great deal of compassion...a great deal of humanity. A great thought-provoking read.
Ugh. So, let's just say that this one ended up in my possession by mere accident. I had a book in my hand about an American running a bistro in France, and somehow I managed to not be holding that one in the end and bought this one instead. And, since I'm too lazy to return anything EVER, I read it. Yeck. It was written by a young adult writer and it's quite obvious. The story is like a really bad episode of CSI, without any interesting commentary by witty science-type-guys. It focuses around a girl who can't stop eating, and claims that she'll start her diet "tomorrow" throughout the book as she gets fatter and fatter and fatter. (Although I agree that size 14 isn't necessarily fat, she talks of little more than food: her morning bagel with cream cheese and bacon reeks of someone that will soon be a size *16*. And yes, I understand that this is part of the premise, but STILL.) Somewhere in the midst of her whining about being in love with her male roommate and eating herself silly, she manages to help solve a crime involving a sadistic fraternity and a cheerleader's decapitated head, found in a dormitory on a New York college campus where she works. Yes, it really is THAT stupid.
This one didn't resolve as well at the end of the others in the series. I will have to read the next one to figure out what happens, of course - lol.
