Yes, it's true. The quiet ones are very much the wild ones. And in this case, Eric was the absolute wickedness of the Donovans. The bedroom (or the wall, the hallway, the dining table, the office) scenes were totally on fire! I am gushing here, I know. Who knew Eric the proper preppy brother had all that rowdy blood in him. I was pretty bored during the first 50% of the book with Jaime and Eric constant fights. It got very old with the fights. But things picked up a bit after that and it's kinda sad being that this is the last book about the Donovan siblings. It almost felt like I'm saying goodbye to close friends. I will miss all you crazy Donovans and your equally hot significant others. Will look forward to more VD's works.

** spoiler alert ** This is the best book in the series. It's too bad that Riordan isn't writing about Percy anymore, but he's going to write another Camp Half-Blood series! The new Great Prophecy arrived at the end of the book. "Seven half-bloods shall answer the call. To storm or fire, the world must fall. An oath to keep with a final breath, And foes bear arms to the Doors of Death."

Anderson gives an excellent general overview of the evidence for how architects worked, who they were. Especially interesting is the chapter on "Manpower and Materials," in which he describes the problems of getting and moving the materials and labor to the job sites, the debate about slave labor vs. free labor. The chapters in the section called "Organizing Space" provide some very interesting overall introductory comments on city planning, public and private building - including some very interesting comments on taberbnae and the social implications for "mixed use zoning" in the insulae of the big cities. While these chapters give an great introduction to the types of buildings and their orientations in cities, and he even suggests that buildings and their locations could be used as propaganda, the theoretical analysis is lacking and this leaves it as little more than an overview or introduction. There are extensive notes and the textual references are extensive. There are simply not enough illustrations - not a SINGLE photograph in the whole book - which makes many of the descriptions less useful. The line drawn plans provided are often less than clear and are frequently lacking directional indicators of North. Lastly and most importantly, he fails to describe decoration and detail - as if structurally insignificant detail are inessential to the lived experience of architecture in society. This book would be most useful as a broad introduction for someone hoping to get a big picture of the elements of architecture in the Roman world. I imagine it could be very useful for advance undergraduates and beginning graduate students.

Betsy Byars neatly succeeds at building a suspenseful plot around a very likable (though highly unusual!) family in this book, one of many about the Blossoms. Betsy Byars's fiercely independent kids in the story are as compelling as always, and a part of me wonders perhaps why this did not taste of Newbery success in 1987. The Not-Just-Anybody Family is very much worth the read.

One of my all-time favorites. I used to re-read this one every year or so but have gotten away from it for a few years, unfortunately. I read Ender's game at the same age (roughly) that Ender was in the book. I could really identify with him for a number of reasons, which is probably why I kept re-reading it over and over again. On top of that, it's a great story - classic good vs. evil kind of stuff. The ending has a very cool twist to top it all off. Put it this way: My first son's middle name is Ender. If my wife had not been so adamant about naming our son after me, his first name would have been Ender.

I read this book all in one day. It was an enjoyable read in which we get to know more about Sophie and her friends and we also meet new characters. I'm looking forward to the next one...which won't be out for a while. Oh well.

I delayed and delayed reading this book. A dystopian novel from 1940 by an author who soon afterward committed suicide? Not light fare. So it sat on my bedside table for a year and a half after I received it as a gift. For some reason, I picked it up two days ago. And I simply could not put it down. A well-written tale -- you could tell the author was a poet. I personally found the only weakness to be the characters, and Boye's ability to convince me that their actions made sense, or even that I should care about them at all. I would recommend skipping over the introduction, however. While it offers a history of dystopian literature of the time, I found it poorly written. At a minimum it should be read after the book, as it includes a section which basically retells the whole story.

The second book in the 'Regeneration' trilogy, 'The Eye in the Door' is just as impressive a book as the first installment, if not more so. Barker's use of language is just superb. Never showy or overly lyrical, but absolutely measured, each word feeling lyrical and right. Sassoon is involved less in this volume, with most of the events centred around Billy Prior and to a slightly lesser extent on Rivers. I think it works very well, because you have Billy set up as a liminal character—someone who is neither working class nor upper class, neither the good soldier nor the pacifist, someone who is literally dividing himself in two—living in an England which is dividing itself in two and which is moving from the long nineteenth century into something completely new. Highly recommended.
