Declan, the boyfriend, has staked everything...home, savings...on his dot.coms that are going belly up save for the soft porn site that he used Emily's saucy photo on, without Emily's knowledge. Things bust open when Emily discovers her "bum" on the Internet...she even loses her job as a school teacher. Didn't disappoint although I could "see" the ending coming. If you want a happy ending, this is a book for you. British author. Previous book For Better For Worse was on Kelly Ripa's reading list...don't hold that against it.

The forward to this claims that H. Rider Haggard was reading a lot of late colonial adventure yarns and remarked to a friend that he could write this stuff, and the friend suggested he do it, so he did. This, I feel, is indicative of this book. It has all the strengths and weaknesses of the genre. The strengths: a true sense of adventure and exploration that marked British sentiment at this time, the sort found in Jules Verne and Rudyard Kipling and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Lost World and the like. The weaknesses: an astounding insensitivity to other cultures and countries. The characterizations of Africans in this are outright painful.

This could easily be a 5 for a teenage girl dealing with eating disorder issues, in need of community love. I bought it because Borders is closing and it was cheap-o. It's not what I thought- a book on writing health-related affirmations. It's a nice book on positive thought, supporting others and what-goes-around-comes-around.

Oracle's Moon picks right up from where Serpent's Kiss ended in the continuing Elder Races series. I do think Oracle's Moon can be read alone, especially since Serpent's Kiss was my least favorite of the books. Oracle's Moon brought me back to what I loved about this series in the first place: extraordinary characters. Grace Andreas never wanted to be an Oracle. Her older sister, Petra, inherited the gift, and Grace was just fine without that kind of added pressure. Then her sister and her brother-in-law are killed in an accident, Grace herself is injured, and she must attempt to raise her young niece and nephew while allowing the Oracle's power to integrate within her. Her introduction in Serpent's Kiss is how Grace became acquainted with Khalil, Djinn prince. What I loved the most is that we see every aspect of Grace's life: the injury she'll continue to suffer from thanks to the accident; her financial concerns; her exploration of her innate ability plus the power of the Oracle; and raising her sister's children on top of all that. She first views Khalil as a nuisance, then comes to rely on him, especially to keep the children from harm. We see this unlikely couple fall in love -- and it's sweet and passionate and amazing. The subplot and major source of external conflict was a bit weak in my opinion, though I'm sure the repercussions will be felt by the entire Wyr world in future books.

This got us through 4 hours of a 6-hour car ride. I think I read it as a kid. It was wonderful to listen to in the car with my kids. It was also fun to hear about all of their Shabbat traditions from 1912, and note with the kids that we do all the same things 99 years later.

Sure, it can be schmultzy at times, but this story is heartwarming and sweet. I really think you must like cats though, to get into this book. If you don't like cats, better move on.

One of the best books I have read. The story was engrossing and the description and setting made me feel I was experiencing everything along with the characters. I would recommend this book to anyone. Part of the book takes place during WWII, so it is never easy to read about that time, but it is well worth the read.

Set in pre-1952 Revolution Egypt, Yusuf Idris tells the story of one of the many foreign owned farms of that time. The story is based on revealing the class stratification, ranging from the migrant workers (who are so downtrodden they sleep behind the barns, in more squalid conditions), the peasants and the owners/managers/bureaucrats. As the upper-level investigator tries to determine who committed the crime of killing a child, he and those around him naturally turns to the lowest caste. However, when no likely culprit ends up there he begins to suspect all of those around him (even his own daughter). Luckily, the story doesn't turn into an everyone destroying everyone else because of their suspicions. Instead, it focuses on how those fears gnaw at a person and cause subtle changes in a community. What I really enjoyed is that even though the suspect ends up being a member of the migrant class (although of different circumstances than expected), Idris doesn't just get to it. Instead, he shows how all castes have their sinners, its just that within a given group those sins are ignored (or gossiped about). Only then is the cause of the crime revealed.
