At first I thought this was a bit naive and sugar coated in it's style and evagelistic in it's view, but then it turns around and is better in the middle and the end. Coming away from it, I feel that we place much emphasis on events in our lives and little on the healing, perhaps that is what needs to change. While I didn't agree with everything said, it was still thought provoking and a pretty good read.

It was the "Griffin & Sabine for the Twitter generation" that made me grab this book - I remember falling completely in love with those books and was curious enough to borrow this "updated" version. Now, I'm not a twit myself, er, that is, I've never really understood the whole love of Twitter thing. It's a public forum where everyone shares their personal experiences? Sounds more like group therapy than social networking, but, hey, it works for many people I respect. Anyhow, realize I had a bit of a bias going in! I tended to forget I was reading basically page after page of Tweets once I got into the flow. That said, it really was more like a private instant messaging converstaion than anything Twitter-related since the whole thing was, well, a series of private instant messages between people who just happened to be using Twitter to send them. This could've been "for the AIM generation" had the author thought of this 15 years ago. I enjoyed the banter, but anyone who's ever been forced so sit through a Hallmark, Lifetime, or (kill me now) Nicholas Sparks movie could see exactly where that "Mark is out traveling the world... Or is he?" question on the back flap going. I am not a huge romance fan (obviously?), but this had its moments. If you're looking for a quick read, something good for a plane ride or trip to the beach, it's not a bad light diversion.

At first, reading this book made my brain hurt. After a while, I grooved to the flow and grokked it fully. Actually, I would imagine I might understand this book better if I had ever taken LSD, which I haven't. Honestly, I wasn't even born when all of this happened. I wish I had been. It seems like an excellent scene. The writing begins semi-journalistically, but quickly devolves into a drug-soaked rambling that's just barely intelligible, until, as I said, you get into it. I mean, really into it. Wolf's words makes one *almost* able to understand what an acid trip might be like. It's an entirely different way of thinking. I think this book is essential to understanding the era.

A lot more of this story is told from the perspective of another slave, Prince Laurent, than Beauty's. Beauty's adventures are rather tame in comparison to Laurent's while they (Beauty, Tristan, Laurent, and a couple others) are kidnapped and held captive in the palace of an Arab sultan. Laurent manages to master one of the sultan's closest advisers, and in so doing become the most dynamic character and the hero of the piece. Fans of the trilogy will rejoice in the ending which promises Beauty's forever-after happiness, but those more squeamish about male on male sexual action will not be pleased with this volume. Personally, I thought it was an above average piece of erotica and mourn Rice's recent conversion to religion which almost guarantees she will not return to writing in this genre.
