Interesting stories of Hollywood in the 50's and 60's, unfortunately, Tony's main focus is letting us know how many "girls" he fucked, especially the famous beautiful ones. No mention when any of his 5 kids are born, but he remembers every gal he bedded! Unintentionally hilarious when he finds out about one of his wives having an affair of her own, as he angrily rants about how "every man fears being cuckolded by his wife." Gee, ok for him but not for her? Luckily, the film stuff kept me interested.

I have to admit that I did not expect to like this much. I don't really do the detective genre (far too prominent on TV, in my opinion). However, I was persuaded to read this by (a) almost-universally good reviews and (b) Amazon lowering their prices for the Kindle version to a price I was willing to pay on the off-chance it was as good as everyone said. The plot hook is simple. Blomkvist, a journalist, loses a libel case over a story he wrote, and his reputation, not to mention his freedom, suffers as a result. After leaving prison, he is approached by an elderly wealthy industrialist to write his family history and work on a cold case; the old man would like to find out what happened to his niece who went missing several decades earlier, before he dies. In return, Blomkvist would be paid for the job, and be given the evidence he needs to clear his name. Unable to publish another news story until his reputation was restored, Blomkvist reluctantly takes on the job. To assist him, the industrialist hires Salander, an wunderkind investigator with apparent autism, an eidetic memory, many useful skills and friends in low places, and an apparent attitude problem. The case is convoluted and wanders firmly into spy thriller territory. In this, although Blomkvist is nominally driving the story, Salander is the real engine in the plot, and quickly emerges as the more exciting character, with Blomkvist almost acting as her foil. Indeed, this is the direction that the author, Stieg Larsson, takes the story as the sequels are primarily about Salander, driven by her background, with Blomkvist playing a more supporting role. I devoured this book over a couple of nights. There were any things that shouldn't have worked for me. The character of Blomkvist is obviously a proxy for the author, also a principled journalist with enemies, but not to the point of being a Mary Sue charater. Salander is almost a male fantasy female cipher; headstrong, naive, thin, bisexual, sexually active and available. Despite this, it did work, mainly because the pacing is good, the plot is strong and the characterisations memorable. Blomkvist is a straight-up, thoughtful, principled, rational character, a moral force in the story. He does spend much of the story slightly bewildered, by the case and by Salander, who turns out to be very highly skilled, with an interesting tattoo and a mysterious and troubled past (almost a Mary Sue - perhaps proxying the author's long-term partner whom he couldn't marry due to his paranoia about what his enemies might do to her?). Salander seems to be naive and vulnerable (and in many ways, she is), slightly crazy, and definitely living on the fringes of society. As a ward of the courts, she has rather limited room for manoeuvre, and it is one of the problems that she has to solve; one she resolves in a dramatic manner. Her problem-solving approach is typically highly focused, but usually subtle and well-considered. The story slowly picks up the pace as it unfolds, and the twist at the end of the primary story thread is satisfying, and a little unexpected, given that one of the prominent themes in the story is that of the general attitude of abuse against women. All in all, a thoroughly good read that I enjoyed.

This is seminal French psychoanylitic theory (that carries on Freud's work in a sense) outlining an interpretive matrix for the general philosophical question of subjectivity. Lacan's insights are applicable to a variety of disciplines within the humanities. In my infinite stupidity I bought the book without realizing that it wasn't a translation of the complete work; I'm a little annoyed by that oversight, but will read it nonetheless and will go on to get a copy of the complete translation if I like this one.
Beautiful but totally impractical unless you actually are a French pastry chef, or Martha Stewart.

This book made me fall in love with Tim Russert even more so. When so many people whine about what their parents didn't do for them and how their parents didn't spend time with them, Tim tells about his hard working father and mother and how their Catholic faith, and good old fashioned family values served to propel him to his dream career. He tells about the good times and memories of his dad as well as the words of wisdom that have served him well in different situations including meeting presidents and the pope. There is a sense of pride which goes in both directions. Not many people can claim to have this kind of relationship with their parents. It is heartening to see it, and feel a part of it. It made me feel like I lost a friend when Tim died but also makes me smile when I see his son following in his footsteps.

A couple that has been happily married for years and years (and years) suddenly hits a bump in the road in the form of (you guessed it) a younger woman. In a familiar story, she is a secretary who sets out to lure her boss from his wife. They have two grown daughters who are not married who are also involved: their lives are dramatically changed by the separation of their parents as well as other events happening in their personal lives. The wife, Betty, adopts the story that her she is a widow and "mourns" her "dead" husband, finding this easier to deal with than the thought that he is divorcing her after almost fifty years of marriage for his secretary. Even as he is assuring her that he is a very generous man, he is stripping her of as much of the money and property as possible, beginning with persuading her to move out of their (expensive) home, something that both daughters vehemently opposed. The three female Weissmans move into a cottage that a generous, well-off cousin offers them while the divorce details are sorted out. This book was interesting enough to keep me listening until the end to find out what happens to them all, but not compelling in a way that made me get too upset over the parts that I missed due to the CD skipping. Bottom line: a nice enough read, but you aren’t missing much if you pass it by.

This is perhaps the greatest story ever written. The Iliad engages every aspect of the diviersity of human experience; our existential uncertainties, our relation to eachother as humans and to the universe and its divinities. It engages, love, passion, truth, hope, honor, politics, religion, warfare, life, death, afterlife, compromise, idealism, light, dark, humanity, divinity, good, evil and the entire stratigraphy between the polar world, we as humans, see set against itself. If there was one book to read in your lifetime - maybe second only to the bible - this would the the one. One cannot claim their education adaquately complete - or even adaquate - having not read The Iliad. I just wish I could read it in the Greek!

Definitely one of my favorites of the books I've read this summer. From the title and summary I was not expecting a dip into an alternate reality, so it came as a very pleasant surprise. Maybe the twist from what I was expecting is what made it so enjoyable. Seemed very Margaret Atwood-ish to me. Very human story in a science fiction universe.

I really enjoyed reading this. It's a lot like reading her blog, Orangette, so I can't say that I just sat and read it all at once, but I admire her ability to talk about her life and food at the same time. I highly recommend the mustard vinaigrette on page 264 (buy the good mustard for this as she recommends).
