First of all, I read a review of this book in some magazine like Time when I was in a gynecologist's waiting room. So who knows what I was thinking when I put it on my to-read list that day. Anyway. Overall, it is a pretty successful YA novel about a few months in a high school geek's life. The plot flows along quickly, there are little shots of humor throughout, and some unexpected things occur. I can't help disliking the voice, though. It's a distracting device to write in the voice of a teenager, and it's difficult not to sound a little wrong and phony (ha--that's for all the Catcher stuff in the book).

Couldn't finish it. Too dense, convoluted and difficult to follow. Eloquent in spurts but lacking the focus and narrative drive of his best storytelling.

This is like listening to hilarious radio show, complete with sound effects. We've listened to it twice and both times I found it so funny I laughed out loud repeatedly while driving. It got us through a long drive through snow over Donner Pass with my parents. They got a real kick out of it too.

Why oh why did i not read this sooner? It has been waiting to be found on my bookshelf for a couple of years at least, mostly because i never expected it to turn out to be anything special, because scholastic turns out these children's books by the dozen, so usually the plot and writing are mediocre at best. This was my mistake, because this is the hidden treasure of a book that will entertain you on the Harry Potter level that you secretly hope for when picking up anything with some magical inclinations in it. Kerr has the absolutely best sense of humor and i have to admit i am now addicted to it. I even laughed out loud in a completely unladylike way at few inappropriate times that earned me a "crazyperson" title from my family.
