This book traces several generations of the Buendia family in a fictional village named Macondo in South America. I found Gabriel Garcia-Marquez to be a compellingly lush writer. Some of his images gave me goosebumps and the frankness and straightforward nature with which he told this story was refreshing. I sometimes wonder with books that have been translated how much credit should be given to the author and how much should be given to the translator. I have no doubt, however, this book would have fallen far short of where I believe it to be if it was transcribed by a less skillful translator.

I loved Anna Karenina (I was at a party once and a Russian friend said, “Oh, all you Americans love Anna Karenina.” Another time, a Russian who had asked me what composers I liked to play on the piano remarked, “Yes, everyone loves Chopin.” Nothing like Russians to call attention to your pedestrian taste in music and literature.) I thought the book was beautiful and romantic and tragic and everything a great novel should be.

It was such a fast read. I couldn't put it down and was anxious to see how it turned out. I didn't feel closure at the end of the novel.

Not quite, but almost fluff ... an easy read. The conclusion of each of the stories seemed to come to quickly and too easily, but it seems like most of these "novella" type books are like that.
