It took me four full months to finish this thing because I relished every detail. The details of everyday life that Tuchman includes create a spell that really drew me in. It was amazing to learn how different these people's lives were from mine, yet how many of the same struggles they faced. Like getting the plague--I HATE that!

This was great! The multiple plot lines/shifting pov was a very functional way of showing how we imprint those around us, how our lives' trajectories pull us out and away from one another, while at the same time, showing how we remain connected. And Egan's ability to develop such round and vivid characters makes this work. I hated letting go of some of these characters, hearing their voices, seeing the world through their eyes and then before I was ready, feeling a shadow of grief at their departure. But as each new chapter began, I was sucked right into the new perspective, quickly overcome by the new character and his/her challenges. Additionally, Egan's prose is phenomenal. Since surely my description of her prose will fail to do it justice, I'll say this. The night I finished this book, I was going to need a bit more reading to come down off the mild high of getting to the end. Somewhat distracted and indifferently, I chose a new novel to start, one in the stack of books I'd been given and had yet to read. Never have I been more disappointed, never have I been so critical of an author's inability to engage me. If you do read this (and you should!), I'd have something ready to read after your done, something entirely different so as not to seem small in the footprint left by this novel. For me, I should've just picked up my copy of The Play of the Hand, a bridge-playing book, and read about finesses and promoting losers before I picked up another novel. Egan is one hard act to follow.
