There are 5 books in this series by Carol Drinkwater (also an actor, who played in All Creatures Great and Small as James Herriot's wife for the first 3 years of the series). They are autobiographical, enchanting, and informative. I'm enjoying them immensely. This is book 3 of the series.

One may be tempted to say that this book already has societal worth by getting The Cure in a hell of a lot of trouble, but it don't stop there! Easily Camus' most famous work, The Stranger (or The Foreigner, depending on how you want to translate L'Etranger) follows Meursault, a disaffected, disillusioned man who stalks through the bleak, dry landscape of Camus' homeland of Algeria. From his commitment of a crime, Camus unfolds his concept of the absurd philosophy rapidly, detailing the ineffective nature of human action and the meaninglessness of life, until its explosive denouement with Meursault raging at the prison priest's imploring him to turn to God. Camus' most bleak look at the world, to be sure.

Short book and I was still bored with it. Was never able to get into it. I heard from others who loved it so i'd figured I'd read it. I guess there's no accounting for taste.

The author, Gary Moore, tells the story of his dad, a baseball prodigy and a WWII veteran. Gary finally heard his dad's story the night before he died. This is a very moving biography and in the end depicts what is really important in life.

This is one of my favorite books of all time- read it twice and surely will again at some point. For those of you who are afraid it is science fiction (and I hate sci-fi), it is actually a love story with the hitch being that the man time travels uncontrollably. Awesome read!
I liked it so much that I named my son after two of the characters, Alexander McKeag and Pasquinel.
"to wound the autmnal city." Thus begins the discussion on society, sexuality, violence, civilization, rebuilding, individuality, identity, love, media, creation, destruction .... A must read for anyone who considers themself a writer. -------------------- Second reading notes: There is still much to be had in this book. I found it a little easier to read (for the most part) and almost easier to understand (much like someone watching Inception does). The second reading allows for a more in-depth study of the characters and their individual goals - or lack thereof - which allows for an even stronger reading of the themes Samuel R. Delany loves writing about (mentioned above ... mostly). The one interesting fact about this reading, though, is that I found some of the tricks to be even better than the first time through and some of the literary tricks to be sillier. What exactly changed (I mean, I had the sensation of getting drunk on the prose near the end) from my first time to this is unclear (I have my theories), but it is yet one more reason to recommend this book. So many interesting pieces of information and so little time - and space - to write them.

I thouroughly enjoyed this book. I loved how Maguire was able to take such a famous story and twist it into something totally diffrent. The Wicked Witch, who is usually depicted as such a flat evil character, really comes to life. Maguire makes Oz seem like such a more real world, filled not only with the beauty of the original story, but also struggle, discrimination and pain.
