This is a much-maligned, and rarely read, book, which is a pity. Arendt's account of the Eichmann trial, and her exploration of the meaning of evil, left me wondering about how many people do evil things thoughtlessly, in Arendt's sense, without thinking, simply because "everyone else" is doing it.

When I first read the description I wasn't sure if I would like the book as it seemed clichéd. However, the narration which switched back and forth between Alice and the detective Simon a week later held my interest and the ending made it all worthwhile.

I had heard, that the ending was really surprising and made the book more fun. Couldn't agree less. I thought the ending was really disappointing and weird. I also didn't like much that in the story there are other stories, which are integrated (the main character reads them) but that for a long time have no real connection to the main plot and that are way too long for my taste. All in all it was an ok book, but nothing I would recommend

A book club selection. I thought the premise of the book was quite interesting in much the same way as The Hours. Says a lot about the story that the fact of Nancy Travis (who isn't one of my favorite actresses) was the reader didn't distract from the story.

The book cover describes it as human interest stories surrounding major Supreme Court decisions. While engaging at times, the book is a lot denser than I anticipated and it took me 2 library renewals to finish it. Nice descriptions of famous cases, though, especially Dred Scott v. Sandford, Hirabayashi v. United States, Brown v. Board of Education, and Roe v. Wade.

I read this novel because I'm interested in representations of the British experience during World War II. The events here, mostly an extra-marital love affair and its fallout, start during the war and move forward in time, although where the reader comes into it is after the war ends with flashbacks to what's happened before. The basic story is a familiar one, but what I found most compelling is how it seems that the information the characters most need is what the reader gains even though the characters never do. Ultumately, this makes for a very sad ending to a book that asks questions about faith, promises and love.

As acclaimed as Sedaris is as a humorist, I think he gets short shrift as an observer of the human condition; there's more of both tragedy and sweetness than immediately meets the eye. As an essayist he's a Twain for our times, though obviously lacking the grand fiction. This isn't his very best work; he's used up most of his best family/coming of age stories, and too much of his subject matter is "David Sedaris, famous world-traveling author."

Ginny's aunt's last wish is for her to take a whirlwind trip around Europe. The catch: she can't contact anyone from home by phone or e-mail (snail mail is encouraged), she can only travel with a backpack, and she must follow the instructions left to her in the 13 blue envelopes, opening them one by one as directed. As she makes her way through London, Edinburgh, Paris, and beyond, she learns a little more about her aunt and herself. A great story about a girl finding her own way through life.
