I read this book again for the first time since high school and enjoyed it much more the second time around. I don't know if I just have a bit more patience nowadays, or if I had to convince myself that it was okay that the book was nothing like the movie. (True Dumas lovers, I get that I wasn't supposed to like the movie because the book was so good - or whatever - but sue me, I thought it was a great film.) I concede that this book was a long one, but I think Dumas knew that while he was writing it. For instance, there are several "stories within the story" (Bertuccio's revenge, Luigi Vampa's life, the carnival at Rome) that seem like they're intentionally placed there to give the reader a break from what they're reading to hear another yarn about something completely different that also happens to be super entertaining. In the end, I think we all know the message of the book, so I won't bore anyone with my interpretation of it, but I'll just say that I didn't realize that old books like this could be such page turners! From front to back I was having a hard time setting the thing down when I should have been studying or working. If you feel like a long book that's totally worth it, pick this one up.

"Absurd" is probably the best word to describe the adventures of Mr. Muo. At times, it was really funny, almost ironical wisdom captured in cute, fascinating descriptions. But only at times. For the most part it was actually rather dull and pointless, mostly I struggled to stay invested much longer. After the brilliant "Balzac and the little Chinese seamstress" this was a let down. There were good points in presenting a modern day China every day life but those got lost somewhere in the "absurd" efforts and rambles of Muo when he is trying to find a virgin to bribe the local judge with so his beloved girl get released out of prison. The digressing anecdotes along the journey were worth more of my reading time then the inane main plot (I know, I know, the journey is the destination!). I was hoping the ending would deliver some sort of reward after all but it remained just another fragment of quirky absurdity.

I read this book in about 2 days. It was written well, and the poetic novel style of writing was new for me too. I think it allowed me to read it faster. I laughed and could really relate to a lot of what was happening in the author's life, especially trying to stop the clock and defy the inevitable aging process....and dreading that "big 5-0" that is coming faster than a freight train!
I picked this up because I liked Jeanine Frost's Night Huntress series. This is the only paranormal in this collection. Unfortunately, it was lame, and the rest go downhill from there. I've run out of superlatives: lame, lamer, lamest, lamerer? Lame supreme? The winner for lame-idity goes to the last story, "Charmed by her smile.” She fondles his gray hair as he anguishes about how young and innocent she is, not even being “out” at her London Season yet. I think this relationship could be prosecuted as a criminal offense in most states. Ick.

I rounded up from 3.5 stars . . . What I learned: --Swedes drink lots of coffee. --Swedish men are misogynists (and I'm not sure I can exclude the author from that generalization). --In Sweden, you can go to jail for libel. The "locked room" mystery part of this book is nicely paced and addictive--I recommend the book for that aspect. The rest of it is uneven: unnecessarily graphic violence, plodding fascination with journalism (the author was a journalist and is fascinated with the inner workings of the media in a way that only journalists can be), and an abrupt unsatisfying ending. Despite all of that, though, I couldn't put it down after the first several chapters.

This novel has one of the strangest narrative structures I have ever encountered; it is certainly Woolf's most experimental novel.

ALICE BLISS by Laura Harrington 06/11 - Publisher: Penguin Group - Hardcover, 320 pages Ask yourself every day - what can I do to support the military and their family? When Matt Bliss made good choices to support his country as well as his family he never imagined the impact it would have on any of them. Joining the Army National Guard provided extra income, which everyone saw as a plus until the reality of war came knocking and Matt was called up to serve because they desperately needed boots on the ground, even those filled by an Engineer. His wife is unsure how to cope without him and his daughter’s especially seventh grader Alice cannot deal with their father being away. Alice and her father have always been close and having him not there to discuss the garden layout or work on a project is breaking her heart. He wants to share his life with her but Matt knows he has to keep in mind he may not be there to do that and Alice try as she might does not want to hear any of this. Matt ships off and those left at home take on new roles and personalities especially Alice who quickly has to become an adult and take over running the house to help her mother out even though she is still just a child trying to figure out how to deal with middle school. Alice has great friends who stick with her and she maneuvers the landmine that is her new life but nothing will ever be the same regardless of the outcome. What Matt wanted most was letters from home “something to carry with him close to his heart” and Matt wanted to leave letters to his family so he filled journals with letters and notes to his daughters so at every critical point in their life they have his wisdom to take with them. This is not Matt or Alice’s story alone it is the real life of every soldier who leaves their family knowing they may never come back and everyone it impacts. It is truly the most difficult book I have ever read and it is a great story that we should all understand. I had a hard time reviewing it because it breaks my heart writing words that can never give you the complete emotion impact of how real this story is to some family right now. But you should read this book and you should remind yourself that if you are not doing something to support the men and women who are defending the rights we are so fond of, then maybe it is time you did.

I read this book virtually in one sitting - the writing was easy to read, and although I didn't necessarily identify with the narrator, I was drawn into the story. Despite its opening line, ("This is the saddest story I have ever heard"), it doesn't really become too sentimental. At best, it is a novel that makes you think about appearances - how we judge others by their presentation to us, and how we interpret their actions in light of our own human experiences with hte world. At worst, the narrator, and none of the other characters in the novel, for that matter, are very likeable.
