Finally finished the book I've been meaning to read for around 2 years! Kinda sad, considering how short it is. Anyways, I loved the combination of humour and elements of sci-fi awesomeness. This novel is very well-written, and the fact that it had me laughing 30+ years after publication is a testament to that. It definitely got me interested in reading the rest of the "trilogy". First off, however, I want to re-watch the movie! Marvin is my favourite.

This book is a classic! The illustrations are priceless and will have you laughing out loud! Mo Willems keeps getting better and better with these Elephant and Piggie books! I had the pleasure of hearing him read this aloud to a large gathering in Princeton. He was hysterical and had the whole crowd laughing!

I really liked this book a lot, and think it appeals to even people uninterested in science-fiction. Technically it fits into that genre, since it's about first-contact with aliens, but it's really about faith. The author does an excellent job of exploring faith from many different angles: faith in friends, faith in people on loves, faith in religion, faith in humanity, faith in science. Throughout the book the theme of having faith, rejecting it, and then learning and finding oneself repeats and the result is a story about contact with one's self in addition to the overt story about contacting aliens. Plus, by the way, the science is pretty minimal and the author does that juxtaposition where half the characters in the story are sort of dismissive of the physics involved so the other half has to explain it repeatedly, keeping the reader up to date as well. It can be corny, but I think it works in this book.

classified as nonfiction though freud haters would beg to differ. while not a fanboy i do appreciate the work he and breuer did. fascinatingly enough it is the comment of the first case study patient that i think sums up the underlying benefit of psychology. she called it "talk therapy". and i think she was right. freud and breuer cracked the door open on virtually taboo topics and this included the emotional life as well as the sexual life of the individual. that being said the most useful contribution is that of having a neutral, nonjudgmental outside party reflect yourself back. this can be invaluable for those suffering from long term psychological trauma and all the repercussions that seem to automatically follow. having said that, while i havent found much in freud personally useful it is fun to apply his system to myself and the world around me, just to see what happens. the other interesting note for myself here is my complete lack of interest in jung. you would think with the incredibly large amount of spirituality hovering in the background i would be all over some jungian concepts. but frankly i prefer the blunt attempt at materialism that freud makes with his approach. jung is too much like skating around death, around the material with some large Other. bouncing chemicals and atoms make more sense to me most days.

A book about a town, hell (purgatory maybe, but I'm thinking hell), Mexico, history - I'm not sure what else is in there but that's enough. This book is almost a blueprint for Solitude - and the influences of Rulfo can be be seen, like fault lines, throughout late 20th century Latin American authors (at least in the few I've read). Highly recommended

Possibly my favorite agatha christie book, a different sort of mystery in some sense - its not framed in the standard "follow the detective as he/she solves the mystery" which I think adds to the way the odd plot is advanced. creepy, dark and I bit suprising in the end but I relished every moment of the slow and impending end. Also in case you wondered the movie version of this book is terrible in the way it ties up in a happy ending (i've been hooked on classic films recently so i thought it would be cool to see the 1945 movie). This book has much darker end but far more intriguing.
