Ugh, I have read all of this book that I intend to read. Though it was published in 93, I felt as thopugh it was written in the 70's. Really felt quite dated.

The book got better near the middle. If you can make it through the tedium of the pseudo-Russian/English dialogue, the plot may lure you in. I could not help but wonder if adult Russians seem child-like to each other when conversing in Russian, or only when an English speaking author creates dialogue in English for them. If that does not bother you much then you may enjoy reading this book. I had to finish it because I know a bit about the Russian Revolution so I enjoyed that part of it. The fact that it was based on a true story was also intriguing to me. The faith of that LDS Russian family is truly inspiring. This book was a Christmas gift. If you want to borrow it just let me know.

There has been a ton of tiresome commentary written about the word "scrotum," which appears on the first page of this book. All of that energy might have been better put to use talking about the story itself, which is hell-bent on quaint and doesn't hold up to much deep scrutiny. Newbery by the numbers.

I remember seeing this on Oprah's book club years ago.. I had to beg my local Paper Plus to order it in for me.....and I'll never forget the first time I read this book ... I've read it another 4 times since.
