This is the book that convinced me that natural childbirth was the way for me to go! Very influential to me!

This book came into my hand at a time when I was thinking gardening and farmers markets and "what is so great about organic, anyway?" - that is to say, at a time when I was very receptive to the book's message. Fortunately Nick picked up this book (while I was in the middle of it, oh well), which opened his eyes to food issues as well. In fact, some of our best conversations about how we want to actually live in this world started out as conversations about this book. So what I got out of this book was a new resolve to pay attention to seasonality in my fruits and veggies; a willingness to buy the more expensive local and organic foods, because that is not an area of life to be chintzy about; and new adventures in cooking, making food, and gardening on a teeny tiny Manhattan balcony. I agree with people who say this book is preachy. It is absolutely intended to make you feel depressed about how you live and eat, and realize that her family is better than yours. The upside is that she gives really practical advice about how to change, and you can either hate and envy her or take the advice and make things better - I think people either love or hate this book depending on which of these they choose. The sections written by Camille Kingsolver are the worst, just insufferably holier-than-thou, so I simply stopped reading those parts. Much better that way.

Ridiculous, thinly veiled Duke. Non-sensical college antics for this sake of shock value

Recommended from my friend Laura. Includes some facts and "fiction" of these two people. Been interesting about the womens movement....and who influenced this woman.

This graphic novel is quite impressive. The illustrations are grey-green, setting the tone of the "Fun Home" or funeral parlor. It deals with gender identity issues, family relationships, intertextuality and death. Plus you have to love a memoir that frames its characters through comparisons to famous literary figures like Proust, Camus and Fitzgearld. Even Joyce's Ulysses plays a significant role in the book.

This guy confesses to the stuff Chomsky has been saying for years and comes across as a self-righteous jackass while doing it. The writing is rather poor. Interesting material.

2009 Newbery Honor book. The novel weaves several character plots together and they come to a satisfying conclusion. The vile human character, Gar Face, is quite merciless and violent. The self-centered, deceptive intentions of the shape-shifting snake Grandmother are balanced by the "voice of consciousness-type" thoughts of her friend, the Alligator King (The alligator also seems to represent the time unchanging, instinctive nature of wildlife). The bad characters are balanced by the pure of heart characters: the cat, her kittens, and the dog, and the shape-shifting hawk and snake family. Most of the book's narration is gentle and kind and comes from the cats, dog and Grandmother snake, however, caution: age-appropriate for readers who are ready for a few shocking scenes concerning Gar Face's sinister ways and the deliberate, pre-meditated murder of animals.

I love Roald Dahl. Period. How can you not love an autobiography that starts out with, "An autobiography is a book a person writes about his own life and it is usually full of all sorts of boring details. This is not an autobiography." He tells his real life experiences just the way he tells his fictional stories: with hilarity and clarity. I always feel like I'm right there with him and giggle right along with him, or cringe right along with him. Great storyteller!

A tale of abduction and the missing that explores the family's journey of what they go through in looking for the missing. I felt the book lacked emotion and that the characters could give more to add to the story.
