Excellent prose that is beautifully constructed, though the message of a universal belief lands awkwardly at the end. Recommended for everyone.

I marked this as Read but in fact I only managed to read 5 pages. It seemed like such an interesting topic - deconstructing a twinkie ingredient by ingredient to understand how we've come to accept processed foods as substitutes for real food. But in fact it was pretty tedious.

suspenseful, three dimensional, complex characters. I was engrossed right up until the last sentence which inspired an "oh no!". Will definetly read the next one and passing this one on to 13 year old daughter. It really is a 4.5, and I would have given it 5 stars but I feel strongly that I have read another book with a very similar premise (although I can't remember what that book was . . .)

Loved the premise of this book, but it was quite boring at times. In short, Roget was melancholic, emotionally closed off (albeit due to a chaotic childhood and mentally ill mother), and prone to bury himself in his work as an escape from life. I was interested to learn that Roget was trained as a physician. Unlike modern physicians/doctors of today, a physician back then treated internal diseases and were the most educated and respected of the medical profession. In Roget's time, physicians comprised only 10% of all doctors. He is also discovered the concept that the retina typically sees a series of still images as a continuous picture. This was an insight that would eventually lead to the creation of movies, and was discovered by Roget when he noticed a carriage riding by his basement-level office through the blinds on the window. Roget had some interesting personality quirks, but there was nothing as earth-shattering or as dramatic as The Professor and the Madman. I'm glad I read it, though, just to learn more about the Thesaurus and its roots. Other random factoids: - In Roget's time, students paid their professors directly when they attended their lectures. The going rate was about 3 guineas a class, which is worth slightly more than a pound. - London was the first city in the world to reach over 1 million residents in 1811.
With "Elphame's Choice" P.C. Cast continues in the same vein as her breakout novel, "Goddess by Mistake." Elphame, the half-human, half-centaur daughter of Etain, beloved of Epona, is very unhappy. As a human/centaur hybrid, Elphame is human from the waist up but her two legs resemble those of a centaur, ending with hoofs. Because she was so obviously marked by the Goddess, all who see her worship her. While she is revered and worshipped, outside of her own family she is not seen for who she is on the inside. It is this longing for acceptance that prompts Elphame to take her younger brother and seek her destiny in the ruins of the MacCallan. Castle MacCallan was destroyed in a war over 100 years ago by a race of bloodthirsty demonic creatures called Fomorians. And ever since she was a child, Elphame has been captivated by the legends of the ancient keep. So, with a small band of humans and centaurs at her disposal, she sets about recapturing the grandeur and splendor of the castle. Before leaving, her brother has a premonition that Elphame will meet her destiny, and her life mate, while at this castle. Soon, these visions come true in the form of a half-man, half-Fomorian named Lochlan. Terrible events begin to unfold: will her new clan support Elphame's decision or will their hatred of an ancient enemy be too strong to overcome? While I enjoyed this book, I found myself becoming more interested in the secondary characters than I was in the main characters. The love story of Elphame's warrior brother Cuchulainn and a scarred healer named Brenna was just as interesting, if not more so, than the romance between Lochlan and Elphame. While the story and plot were good, the characters weren't as dynamic as Cast usually writes. Barring a few small flaws, "Elphame's Choice" was a wonderful novel, and I'm waiting for the next installment!

I read this back in college and loved it. I'm thinking about pulling it out again to see if I love it as much the second time around as I did the first. I think it really spoke to me at the time because I just started college and was trying to find my way just like the main character. Overall it is a solid read.

My first Jane Green novel. I liked it enough to read all of her novels and continue to watch out for what else she publishes. Good times.
