Thank you to all my GR friends for recommending this book. It was a delightful read! I normally cannot stand instant-attraction or initially-lust-based romances - unless it's straight-up erotica, at which time the relationship development is not of key interest *wink* *wink* - here though, it ended up working. There's no covering up the fact that Lacy and Hunter initially hook-up based on physical attraction alone: neither of them pretends that it's more than that at the beginning and the author doesn't ask us to believe otherwise either, which is why I think it worked for me. The gradual progression of their relationship felt authentic and Calhoun did a fabulous job of slowly making it far more than only sexual chemistry between these two. Our Heroine. Lacey (36) is recently divorced and wants to experience the one-night stand she's never had; the only person she'd ever been with was her husband, and now that he's no longer in her life she wants to experience a little fun and spontaneity. Her character ended up being very different from what I expected at the beginning of the book. She's a petite redhead who, though very wealthy with a huge trust fund, continues to work and is actually an extremely successful businesswoman who thrills at the competition and loves the feeling of closing a deal. Lacey is part of that upper echelon of society, but from the beginning she's very likable and down-to-earth. I loved that she had the confidence to pave her own way and to not be bothered too much by what other people thought or by what she was "supposed" to do - i.e. become a stay-at-home mom and give up her lucrative career in order to support her husband's. Our Hero. Hunter (28) is a police officer and in terms of numbers, he's a player. The thing is, he never comes off as that "rakish" sort; he's slept with god knows how many women and never really had a relationship with any of them, but you know that he's always honest and upfront from the beginning and is not into leading a woman on just to get into her panties. He's very stern, serious, unreadable. I loved that he has this hard front that he shows to almost everyone, but as the book goes on he starts to let Lacey in more and more. We of course get to know more about what's going on thanks to the POV third-person switches between the two of them. He's so honorable, right from the beginning, and I found him to be really surprising in that sense. Not that I thought he was going to be a scumbag - he's the hero after all - but I thought it was going to be a case of the playful, never-takes-anything-seriously player who falls for the right woman. Hunter isn't like that at all though. He's so respectful, has a very strong sense of right and wrong, is always willing to take whatever so that Lacey is happy or so that she doesn't worry about something, etc. Their Relationship. The class difference between Hunter and Lacey bothers him immensely and that ends up being the major issue, more than their age difference, which was not what I had been expecting going in. I like it better this way though, because while yes age matters and it is definitely more unusual to see a 36-year-old woman with a 28-year-old man than vice versa, I feel like the class / wealth issue is actually much more difficult to deal with when the woman is the wealthier one. The older, wealthier man is an equation that is as old as time - the reverse, not so much, and especially for the sensitive male ego, I'm sure it can take getting used to. The chemistry between these two is off the charts !!! Oh my! This is an Ellora's Cave book and the sex is hot, heavy, and frequent, so I want to classify it as romantica, however I feel like readers of contemporary romance who don't mind the more explicit side of the genre will really enjoy this too. The connection between Lacy and Hunter feels like it comes from more than just their chemistry in bed, and it's so fun watching them slowly make that discovery. I appreciated very much that there were no Big Misunderstandings and while there is a "conflict" or "obstacle" that precipitates everything coming to a head and then our HEA, it was very realistic and we knew we were heading there eventually. I thought how the characters dealt with it was great. The ending was a little abrupt and I would have liked to see a little farther down the road, whether with a formal Epilogue or a final chapter taking place a few weeks later. Bottom Line. Great recommendation, girls! I can see why you were all raving about it. Well-written, Lacey and Hunter are very likable and interesting characters, and the chemistry ... whew! *fans self* Well let me just say that at one point, I was anticipating needing to use a wind turbine, because a fan was not going to cut it! One of My Favorite Quotes: (Have to look through later to see if I have any others, but have this one from status updates) Kissing meant he had to touch. Touching meant he wanted to crush her under him. Getting her under him meant he had to be inside her, and when he got there the only thing that kept him from losing it and going all caveman on her was the knowledge that he'd scare her to death if he did. (p114) P.S. I'm sorry, but I really have to say this: I've read a lot of Ellora's Cave books now and what is up with their covers?!? I think they so often completely devalue the book and story; there are a few good ones, but some are super cheesy (like this one).
