What to do about a novel like Crash? It disgusted me most of the way through it. Bored me in parts. In it, I could see the future influence it had over a dozen other authors, particularly Chuck Pahlaniuk. And I do very much want to see the film version now. But I didn't exactly enjoy the novel. 2.5 stars because I don't know what to think, rounded up to three cause I'm putting Cronenberg's version on my Netflix queue when I get home.

Nick's books are good airplane books. I pretty much read all of High Fidelity on a flight from LA to Chicago. This one is no exception.

One of my all-time-favourite 7th Doctor/Ace novels. Topping & Day don't simply capture the era...they freeze-dry it in special cryogenics. It emerges a decade AFTER the TV era it emulates...and is even BETTER than that era! Speaking of decade jumps...congratulations goes to the authors for terrifying readers with creepy scarecrows prior to their TV appearance in 2007.
I really enjoyed this book. Character's you could root for, a little historical social commentary, the quiet but inexorable love and power of women when they come together. The only reason that I did not give it 5 stars was that I thought that the ending, while a satisfyingly happy one, was a little too convenient. The progressive white lawyer in town is "working" on the legal issues associated with Rosaleen's arrest and escape? While I understand the excuse for why Rosaleen and Lily aren't hauled back home to face trial, jail, and punishment is that "you cannot beat up someone in jail and get away with it." But I'm pretty sure that back in 1964 in the South you could "get away with it" and many did, in fact, get away with it. More importantly, I also think "you cannot break a prisoner -- even a wrongly accused one -- out of jail and escape and get away with it." I found it hard to believe that the sheriff back in Sylvan would so easily let the whole thing drop. And what about the Tiburon sheriff -- was he going to leave Rosaleen and Lily alone? So, while I wanted everything to work out, the fact that it worked without a hitch rang a little hollow to what otherwise tried to accurately portray the broader social mood and factual context of the story.

It was not everything I had hoped for. But it was very good. He covers a really broad range of theoretical, philosophical, and cultural references. It reminds me of Jon MacKenzie's "Perform or Else" in both that range of sources and the lack of coherent synthesis. I like the artists he mentions as touch-stones (Rauschenberg, for instance), and I really liked his inclusion of advertising materials for goods + services (such as paper shredders or cautioning about identity theft) as objects of study but it didn't really come together for me in the end. I wished he had put together something more compelling, disturbing, dislocating for me as a contemporary, garbage producing american. On a positive note, this book feels like a book-length expansion of a PhD Dissertation, and I think that is kind of neat. I certainly will come back to it to chase down his references. I'm still searching for theories of abject materiality.

Again, I think I like Dostoyevsky's ideas, but the style is just not something I'm into. I often wonder if I am missing something because of translation, but to me the story takes up so much less space than the copious amount of what seems to be unnecessary exposition.

My First Dystopia Book. A great read. Introduces kids to complex ideas in a very accessible story.
I gained a lot of respect for Julia Child because I didn't know anything about her before reading this book. I think I can trust her recipe books and would like to learn from her. On the other hand, this book was actually kind of slow because it was her journal and there wasn't a story plot. Once you stop reading, it's kind of hard to pick it up again.

September 11th was not an image on the screen for everyone, these four girls went to school just up the street. This notebook is one that they passed amongst themselves during a year they would never forget for many reasons.

This book was a fun love story, with a little bit of a mysterious twist.
