I loved this book. Bryson's tales of his father's cheapness and fascination with long car trips to places that have very limited historical significance were eerily reminiscent of our family vacations when I was a kid. I about peed a few times when he absolutely nailed what it was like to visit places like the Henry Ford museum, Wall Drug, and Gatlinburg. While his cynicism is apparently too biting for some readers, all I would suggest is to lighten up - this book is flat out funny and very real.
This quite possibly was better then Little Women. I loved this book so much. It was the first book she had ever written and even though it was shorter than Little Women it was so wonderfully written.

There was such a hype around this book, so many reviews praising its brilliance and wit and intelligence, that I gave in and bought it. And wow, was it dull, and in every respect just trying much too hard. It felt like the author was trying to emulate a voice that he thought would go down well with popular magazine book pages, and it apparently worked. Still it left a stale aftertaste.
The Grandfather of Horror has some great ones. From the Mountains of Madness and Call of Cthulu to my fav. the Shadow over Innsmouth, Lovecraft paints a bleak picture of doom fated man left bereft and tiny against the the mighty expanse of huge, deathless space. Lots of interesting points could be made in the same vein of Shelly's Frankenstein, but regardless, the stories rock like a good death metal guitar solo.

A relaxed, down to earth approach to business from a baker that has created a very successful customer-focused business that attracts people from afar. Lots of amusing stories that articulate his learnings in a nice a simple format.

Hold Still is a book about living wrapped up in the story of suicide. Caitlin's best friend, Ingrid, commented suicide unexpectedly. We meet Caitlin the summer after this event which is also the summer before her junior year of high school. The concept of using Ingrid's journal - discovered by Caitlin by chance - to touch back on events in the girls' past worked beautifully. It allowed the reader to connect with Ingrid in a way that simple exposition would not have afforded. There are illustrations in the book - not too many - that also allow the reader to form a connection. Secondary characters are well-written and well-used. Caitlin's parents are extremely well-received and function as adults with purpose. Her friend, Dylan, serves a dual purpose. Her friend and something-more, Taylor, is a sweet boy with such earnest connections. Smart, quiet, well-crafted book.

This book gets better with multiple exposure. Had read it four times before I listened to the audio. Moving storyline.
