I've grown weary of fantasy settings where a powerful empath can distinguish the good and the bad guys, tell when his buddies are in trouble, and in general solve the world's problems while being beloved by all. I think this series has been stretched to its limits.

(crossposted to librarything and witchoftheatregoing.wordpress.com) Apparently this was inspired by Forester’s “Room With A View”. Interesting fact, I guess, because not much else in this book felt very different or original. I wish I could give this book more stars, but I just can’t. This is a theme that has been done before (the odd couple meeting girl interrupted), and I’m afraid to say that this book doesn’t really break the mold. Don’t get me wrong – the prose is lovely, and flowing, and lyrical – I’ve never been to Spain, but I was completely sucked in to Sternberg’s description of Barcelona. Her way with words is probably the saving grace for this entire novel, because it’s been awhile since I’ve read something using powerful resting (not active) descriptive imagery. I felt that Miranda as the older sister was incredibly overbearing and just plain annoying throughout most of this book. Yes, I understand you’re worried about your little sister in a foreign country, and you’re worried about her state of mind, but so many of your actions were over the top. Olivia, on the other hand, was a very fun character (considering she’d just had an emotional meltdown during the opening of the book). I could have read page after page about her adventures in Barcelona alone. However, it had to be a love story, so she fell in love, and I found that she became profoundly ordinary after that. If you want a good read, check this book out, but don’t get your hopes up. Enjoy Sternberg’s tour of Barcelona and relax.

Complaint letter turned novel? I wasn't so sure it could work. Maybe it's because the main character is a poet/translator, or maybe it's just that he has an interesting life with a lot of regrets, but I did like it. No grand work of fiction or anything, but it was entertaining, especially on audiobook.
This is my favorite book in the this series. It is great for teens struggling with becoming a Christian. I highly recommend it.
I need a category for "bestseller via marketing, general low standards of readers".

Putting aside time for tending and nourishing the soul through all forms of spiritual discipline. A great resource for all spiritual growth during joy and sorrow.
I remember reading this book the last day of junior hight. I laid out on the hot concrete and read it all the way through. It is the original classic "love story." Short, sweet, and moving. aw : )

I enjoyed this book thoroughly. This book was recommended to me while I took a college class down in the desert South West of the US. It definitely gave me the chance to see how other people looked at the area and how they've responded to it.

I am giving the audiobook version 5 stars. The story was okay, but the performance was incredible. If you've never listed to an audiobook, I would recommend this as one to begin with...but then again, it might be setting the bar too high for the rest.
