I really enjoy the books Jeff Pearlman writes. This is one about my beloved Dallas Cowboys. He starts the book when Jerry Jones buys the Cowboys and fires Tom Landry hiring Jimmy Johnson to coach the team. This was in 1989 and the Cowboys went 1-15. The book covers their glory years when they won three Super Bowls in four years from 1992-1995. He tells the behind the scenes stories about the drugs, the women, the parties and the football. No one comes out unscathed in this book. All the way from the owner to the players who were cut early on-the Cowboys were not very likeable. Jones was a rich football idiot who hired a coach, Jimmy Johnson, who had an ego the size of Texas. They went form allegedly buddies to hating each other in five years. They also won two Super Bowls. After Jones fired Johnson he hired Barry Switzeer and the wild Cowboys became the completely out of control Cowbooys. They also won another Super Bowl. Michael Irvin was a drug taking player who cheated on his wife all the time. It does tell how he turned his life around after he retired and brought his ego under control. Emmitt Smith was also ego driven but a hard worker. Troy Aikmen comes out best in the book along with Jay Novecek. It was fun to see what the players were really like but that is also a little desillusional. Another good quick read from Pearlman. I am looking forward to reading his next book about Roger Clemens.

The reason I bought this book was for one novella: "Winterfair Gifts" by Lois McMaster Bujold, the wedding of Miles Vorkosigan and the star of my favorite book series. As soon as the book came in the mail, I read it immediately and loved it. It was very much a Lois story - wonderfully crafted and highly enjoyable. I then read the other five stories in the collection. It's very odd to find an anthology that contains only stories I enjoyed and loved. Usually, there's a mishmash of some that I love, some that I liked, some that were mediocre, and some that I could barely finish. I loved every story in IR and don't regret paying the 14 dollars for the book at all. The premise of the anthology is a mixing of SF/F and romance, much like what Harlequin books is trying to do right now with their Luna line. However, I think this book far surpasses their Charmed Destinies in quality, talent, and just sheer variety. I already knew and loved Bujold and Asaro; had read a few of Jennifer Roberson's books. But I have never read any of the three romance writers featured in the book. But from the quality of their stories, I may seek them out. The stories in this book show that it is very possible for writers to transcend genre boundaries and do it well. Highly recommended.
