Such a disappointment! Until this bore, I really thought Shreve was infallible. It read like a grotesquely overworked, over descriptive, bad Jodi Picoult novel. I stuck with it until the end looking for something, some twist, that would make it all more poignant and less pointless. After finishing the book, I read Shreve's commentary and discovered that she was trying to write so that the reader couldn't tell if the author was a man or woman, and that it was her first foray into the 'thriller' genre. This explains the awkward painfulness of the book, but it doesn't excuse it.

During Freshman year, Joe V and I decided to watch Gone With the Wind. I distinctly remember sitting in my dorm room watching it on my small dorm tv/vcr combo. For the rest of the school year, Joe and I would randomly say the phrase, "Miss Scarlett, I ain't know nothin' about birthin' babies!" I read the book my junior year when I noticed it on my roomie Sarah's book shelf. She said it is a great story, and I thought, "well, it better be good if I've got to read 1000 pages to get through it.." and it was better than good. It was great. I love Scarlett and Rhett and Ashley and Melanie.....This was the fastest 1000 page read ever! If I had a pony, I'd name it Bonnie Blue Butler. Just kidding!

I think I'd give this 3.75 stars. It's not that I didn't enjoy reading it--I read most of it in 24 hours. It's just that I didn't find Jack's musing all that plausible for a 5-year-old. I know, he was precocious, having had the unhampered attention of his mother for five years. But something about it bothered me. Because I didn't really find the narrator credible, I couldn't admire the writing. It's hard for an adult to mimic the innocence of a child, and I think it usually ends up too contrived. That's what happened here.

Mystery is my genre of choice and has been since I was little. I've read every mystery Anne Perry has written. She has a fascinating personal history and I love the detail she puts in her stories. This book is the latest in the Monk series. It begins with a chase to capture a man who exploits boys and has killed one of them. Monk thinks he has a slam dunk, but Sir Oliver Rathbone is the defense attorney. Monk, Hester, and Oliver are pitted against each other and their once close friendship hangs by threads when the killer is found innocent. Monk vows to bring him to justice and Hester agrees. And things go from good to better in the story. I really liked this book. Again, my biggest complaint about Perry's books is that she gets to this great ending and stops. No resolutions about characters, etc. But she usually fills it in at the beginning of the next book. I just hate waiting that long. Still,if she writes it, I'll read it!

This book really does make you think! It`s a philosophy book about Life, Love, Education, and the World around us, which was taken from talks given by Krishnamurti to students and teachers in India. Think on these Things is in a format that is easily digested, but the deeper issues raised in it will definitely leave you pondering over them long after you have read it. I read this book at the recommendation of one of my friends, and am currently reading again it for the second time...

This is a young adult book? Hard to believe a story narrated by death and featuring considerable angst is fodder for young teens, but perhaps kids grow up faster these days. The story follows a young German girl and her adoptive family through the years prior to Hitler's rise and through the second world war. Characters are deftly drawn, and the author skillfully pulls the reader through the book. This is an exceptional read for everyone, chronicling the lives of an ordinary family in desperate times.

It's like a backwards Cinderella... the girl has it all, and then she loses it all... but the good thing is she finds it again!

I read this book for a class I took called Race and Violence in the American City. The book was written by my professor (Paul Bass) and another Yale professor in the Political Science Dept. and School of Management, Douglas Rae. It was a well written book and for anyone interested in New Haven and Yale history during this turbulent time, this is a great book. As a Yale student, I thought it was fascinating to read about how the university was during the '60s, under the leadership of Kingman Brewster, who had a very different style from President Levin and was much more open to student suggestions and listened to their grievances. Students back in those days had a different kind of fire in the belly; of course, they got little done, but it's still amazing to read about it.

The Stranger is a lot like The Catcher in the Rye for me. I read it the first time and thought that Meursault was so tragic and misunderstood. The second time, I thought Meursault had some flaws in his thinking. The third time, I thought he was psychologically maladaptive and had limited understanding of women. Same thing for Holden C. But, The Stranger is a great book, simply written but a strong story. If you are learning French, you should definitely try reading this in French - it's doable.
