Pointless and vulgar, like David Sedaris channeling Chuck Palahniuk.

The best sort of compendium of issues related to agricultural practices in the United States and how they effect eating habits and the environment. Explanatory without being condescending, the articles also don't overwhelm the reader or beat them over the head. One of the more sensible in this category.
I love this book! The plot is more complicated and more action-packed than Everlost.. I can't wait to read the final installment of this series!

I understand that Gawande got a lot of criticism for the content in this book, but I thought it was honest and interesting. Some of the situations he describes are certainly similar to ones I observed/heard about when I was an EMT. If you are squeamish about medicine or descriptions of surgery, this one is definitely not for you, though!

You might like this book if: You’re a skeptic, you get depressed by this, you know a lot (or a little) about the Scopes Trial, you think séances, channeling, and psychics are a bit of a joke, you love Connie Willis, you are making your way through all the Hugo Award Winners (best novella), you can laugh at yourself for at least thinking once or twice of ordering stuff off of infomercials, or you like H.L. Mencken quotes. You probably won’t like this book if: You are a creationist, you believe that séances, channeling, and psychics are NOT a bit of a joke, or you don’t like Connie Willis. Plot in a sentence: A man who runs a skeptic magazine and his Lady Bountiful partner attempt to uncover one of those people who charge hundreds of dollars to contact the ghosts of your loved ones and other fascinating jazz like that.

This slim collection of Sandburg's poetry left me hungry for more. Sandburg's style initially feels lackluster then, upon rereading, the brilliant images jump out at you like a bullfrog shot from a cannon. At times, perhaps, a little too colloquial, over-emphasizing "common wisdom" to a fault. Still, Sandburg was a true American bard in the tradition of Walt Whitman.

This book totally surprised me. I was going through some books I had with places in the title and there were two I hadn't read that interested me. I needed something to read in the evening, but not put me to sleep. Both of the books were nonfiction, which my brain wasn't feeling up to nonfiction (undoubtedly due to the wine I'd had earlier in the evening) so I dug a little further into the pile. The blurb on the back sounded amusing so I thought I'd give it a try. To my complete surprise, I thoroughly enjoyed it. More of a modern day Ugly Duckling than chick lit, the story follows Linda Stone, a bad waitress with bad attitude, as she follows the trail of a feather and a photograph to learn about her long dead mother. The process takes her from Somerville MA, to Las Vegas and Paris. That the journey involves some hard truths, interesting characters, explorations of art, self-discovery and a lot of humor made it a delightful book to read.
