Heard this was just fantastic and was disappointed. Yes it is good but was expecting something really special.

I don't remember the story as well as I remember incidents in the story that almost seem to serve as metaphors. (Though they may only seem like metaphors because I can't remember the entire plot). A very entertaining writer in an reportedly good translation.

For a long while now, I've been stumbling to formulate words that could possibly describe Maggie Stiefvater's The Scorpio Races. Every time I began to write a sentence, I would immediately delete everything and start over from scratch. But I've come to the realization that no matter how hard I try to rearrange my words, I'm sure I will still fail to capture what an extraordinary novel Maggie Stiefvater has crafted in her first standalone novel. There's a certain elegance to Maggie Stiefvater's prose which is truly her own style. Her words flow so seamlessly that you barely notice the pages eagerly turned as the story progresses. And in The Scorpio Races, she sweeps you away into a world that's at once enticing and exhilarating... but also frighteningly dangerous and cold at the same time. I was utterly fascinated by the capaill uisce, these ferocious water horses who were drawn to the Scorpio Sea in mysterious and magical ways. They’re incredibly deadly and wild creatures, and while they continue to be drawn to land as November approaches, they’re still only a heartbeat away from being beckoned back to the turbulent waters whence they came from. I would have thought the actual Scorpio Races would have been longer, but really, Maggie Stiefvater emphasizes the challenges which both Puck and Sean needed to face in order to even make it race day. They both enter the races for very different reasons, but in the end, their goals are the same: freedom. Puck was courageous and brave to stand up for her family, and no matter how unfair life had been to her, she pulled herself together when it counted and carried on. Sean’s strong, quiet demeanour may have hid his sweet heart… but it was his love for riding with Corr, his capall uisce, which had my heart completely reaching out to him. The relationship that unfolds between Puck and Sean builds with a slow-burning intensity, but showcased how they were such a well-matched pair... You'll be hard-pressed to find another novel as original and beautifully written as Maggie Stiefvater's The Scorpio Races. Everything leads up to an ending which will leave your heart pounding in your chest and absolutely nervous to see who will win… and who will fail. Even if you’re not a fan of horses in novels, I’m quite sure it won’t stop you from absolutely enjoying The Scorpio Races!

I love this book and think it is one of the more hysterical novels I have read, yet everytime I try to explain what is funny about it to people I get weird looks. I have the feeling, that to enjoy this book to the degree I have, one must have experienced a 'scary' parent. Not necessarily an abusive one, or some sort of criminal, but one that allows their children to grow up in an environment where morbid humor rules all.

This was a great and thought-provoking read. Love Evans' perspective that Christians don't always have to have all of the answers. Sometimes a thoughtful "I don't know" is more authentic than an unanalyzed viewpoint one has been fed since childhood. Evans is asking the questions that lots of folks have--great to read about her journey.

3.5 stars. This was a good story, but very predictable. I figured out all the big stuff way before it happened. But I decided to round it up to 4 stars on here since even though I knew what would ultimately happen, I still found myself wanting to listen and find out the details of how it would all play out. It was well written. ********** SPOILERS BELOW ********* I don't have any kids and I've never lost someone to drunk driving, but I cannot imagine feeling the kind of hatred that Jude felt for Lexi. It was an accident. Yes, she made a stupid decision and I can understand anger, but this went way beyond anger. And it may have been solely Lexi's fault according to the law, but Zack and Mia were just as responsible. I can't imagine believing that the right course of action is to send an 18 year old girl to prison for 5 years. And another thing, what the hell with her being shackled while giving birth? This cannot be reality, can it? She wasn't a violent offender. Maybe if she was a psychopath serial killer with martial arts training they might need to shackle her during childbirth, but really? An 18 year old girl in prison for one non-violent offense? I'm sure in the middle of her pain killer-free labor there was a definite threat of her jumping off the table and shanking someone. Rant over.

Light but not memorable, the best parts were the memoir bits connecting the poems. The poems themselves, being extremely topical and, of course, light, don't hold up very well decades later. Trillin made me giggle a few times, and I enjoy his voice, but I think I'll stick to his food writing in the future.
I enjoyed this very much but the tale was more Bethia's Than Caleb's.

Perhaps it is because this is so near and dear to my heart, but Gloria Houston did a fabulous job creating a literary memorial to a woman who truly touched so many lives. Books are so important to us all and as a librarian we can only hope that we touch as many people as we think we do. Thanks for a tribute to the bookmobile as well!!
