I didn't find this book that interesting, but it was funny in parts. I've just read a lot like it already...

Twelve year old Steve Brixton, avid reader of the Bailey Brothers mysteries, has set up his own detective agency. His first case in this book, that of a stolen diamond, is easily solved, but the next one involves the author of the Bailey Brothers series, MacArthur Bart, who has been kidnapped. With his trusty copy of the Bailey Brothers' Detective Handbook, Steve and his good chum Dana pursue the goons and evil doers while being shot at, kidnapped, and facing the insidious plots of the bad guys. A good series book for about 4th grade. Think Hardy Boys, updated.

Very complex but builds to a basic good vs. evil as in most of King's books.

really interesting really good... rocked... ya
While I was reading it, a lot of people I talked to about it said, "So what does Michael Pollan think I should eat?" The book does not provide a clear cut answer - it contains a lot of information gained primarily from experiential research that enables readers to make informed food choices. Pollan acknowledges in the end that his experiences and the meals he prepares from them are extreme examples, but it is the information provided to readers that is the most valuable part of the book. Most criticisms I have read of Pollan's style are of his anthropomorphizing of plants (ie corn is evil and has tricked us into monoculture practices), yet this technique is what makes reading this and The Botany of Desire enjoyable and refreshing. Although now I cringe even more than I did previously when I walk past a Whole Foods, but the Pollan/Mackey debate may have settled the score on that front [http://www.berkeley.edu/news/media/re...]

Reminds me of Ruth. Who's to say you can't give it all up and move forward.

I bought this in the early 90s, when the whole "foodie" thing had recently happened in NYC. I would read this like a novel. Love it, even though I've only cooked a tiny fraction of the recipes.

What a fabulous book! I was amazed at the detail and how I could be so pulled in to a story inspired by a single painting.

This just cracked me up! One of the few times I will ever enjoy reading Jane Austin. Don't get me wrong, she's good, but so boring! Ugh, I'd rather just watch the movie version.
