I like the UK and the British style, it's a great read and an inspiration source, one of the most compete books about the Great Empire!

Amazingly easy read that will grab you emotionally. Well written and engaging story of 12 year old who finds "home" with a great aunt and moves from Ohio to Savanah, Georgia. Great female characters.

I would call this a "devotional biography." Rather than a thoroughgoing chronological examination of Anne Bradstreet's life, the book delves most deeply into her character. And she proves an excellent subject for such an approach as her life provides ample illustration for a host of excellent attributes. Chapter after chapter I found myself convicted of my own shortcomings and called with clarity to greater virtue. It's remarkable how godly people can remain models of behavior across the centuries to people yet unborn. Anne Bradstreet continues to be an older woman (three hundred years older!) teaching us younger ones. My ratings are almost entirely subjective, so in light of how the book blessed me, perhaps I shouldn't allow my one quibble with it to cause me to decline giving it a fifth star. But the editing drove me nuts. I've read several other books and many articles by Mr. Wilson, I read his blog almost daily, and I've listened to hundreds of his sermons. He just doesn't produce phrasing and punctuation clunkers at this rate, so I must assume that those were a product of the editing process. Finally, I think it worth noting that the chapters are the perfect length for bathroom reading! ;-)

I was just notified that I will be receiving a give-away copy of this book. Looking forward to reading it.
The Song of the Lioness Quartet is, in my opinion, Pierce's best work. The characters are all excellent, from Alanna to George to Jon to Myles. When I first read these books as an adolescent, I really identified with the girl dressing up as a boy to be a knight, and that hasn't changed in the decade since I first read them. Great idea, great story, well executed all around. I find the sequel series don't live up to the excellence of the first quartet, but they're still fun and Tortall is an interesting world.

very odd book detailing the U.S.'s covert efforts to overthrow a dozen governments in the past century, a pretty radical topic, but from a liberal mainstream perspective. hwwaahh?? fails to make obvious conclusions about american empire. instead presents the case that meddling in other countries' affairs is bad for the u.s. government. doh!

She's very complacent... a bit annoying...at first her humor is funny--then it becomes egotistical, gossipy, and self-congratulatory.

Four urban fantasy mystery novellas. Enjoyed Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden story (the reason I bought the book), and may very well read more of Kat Richardson's Greywalker books based on the novella here, but Simon Green's Nightside story was terrible (if there are no rules in the world, i.e. anything can happen, and the characters aren't particularly interesting, well, then why should I care about what does happen?). Thomas Sniegoski's fallen angel in Boston was an interesting-enough story, but just not to my taste.
I bought this book at a Silver Jews show, signed by the author. A lot of stars align with this book - Berman gives thanks to Charles Wright, a favorite poet of mine, author of "Black Zodiac" and "The Appalachian Book of the Dead", and UVa professor. There are also hints of John Ashbery's surrealism here, and echoes of Silver Jews lyrics ("a cold black maple hanger"). Berman is a great poet only in the sense that he has an idiosyncratic voice that leads him along to make twisty observations. Berman's concern with the nature of faith and religion is prevalent, deconstructing the symbolism: If Christ had died in a hallway we might pray in hallways or wear little golden hallways around our necks We, as a nation, must support artists like Berman who are taking risks with their writing and music; its not all brilliant, it doesn't all make sense, but he has survived poverty, drug addiction and academia to deliver us something real.
Gorgeous book, as always. I think Tolkien did a bit more characterization in TTT than he did in FotR, but that may be just me.
