Good style, catchy wit... was the only reason I made it through the 2nd half of this book. The story got seriously redundant and the only justification for the second half would have to be his publisher wouldn't let him print what amounted to a short story so he dragged it on and on. One saving grace: James Frey's logic was if that hack could write a story then I can too, and he gave us A million Little Pieces. Say what you want about the controversy, at least it was entertaining throughout. Not the same can be said about A Heartbreaking Work.

More great stuff. Especially fun is the vignette about catapulting plague-infected corpses into castles to infect the trapped inhabitants. Whee!

This was the most fantastic novel I've read in a long time. It reminded me so much of 'A Fine Balance' by Rohinton Mistry which I also loved. A touching, page turning novel to say the least!! From back cover: "Amir is the son of a wealthy Kabul merchant, a member of the ruling caste of Pashtuns. Hassan, his servant and constant companion, is a Hazara, a despised and impoverished caste. Their uncommon bond is torn by Amir's choice to abandon his friend amidst the increasing ethnic, religious, and political tensions of the dying years of the Afghan monarchy, and apparently dissolved when Amir and his father flee to California to escape the Soviet invasion, leaving Hassan and his own gentle father to a terrible fate. But years later, an old family friend calls Amir from Pakistan and reminds him: "There is a way to be good again." And Amir journeys back to a distant world, to try to right past wrongs against the only true friend he ever had." Such a powerful and phenomenal book!!!

This book is slightly boring at times, but it is quite effective for showing a person the ideals of communism. The book is quite short but is very descriptive and detailed in how communism should work and benefits of communism. It is not something I would choose to read again unless for educational purposes.

I found this book to be so disturbing that it gave me nightmares and I chose not to continue reading the rest of the series. I can only comment on the first 2 books in this series, as that is all I read, but I found them both to be inappropriate subject matter for the intended audience. Not a fan.

This book is incredibly informative about the different types of medications and techniques used for dealing with pain in labor. I am very thankful for having read it and feel more confident about decisions I will need to make when the time comes.

Picoult proves how intelligent she can be in this one. I never knew what was up next, and I felt the emotions of every character as I went through. Her details and imagery put you in everyone's shoes-from the young child, to his mother, or the man who longed to be his father. In Perfect Match, the family dynamics are tested, as well as the legal system. I have no ties to the law, but reading this, I left with a greater understanding of it. This one proves that anything is possible, and no detail should ever be omitted.
This is really fun. Read it.

he Good Stuff * Wonderfully well researched * Fascinating historical information * Learned a lot about Matilda, that I had never known before. Ok most of the stuff I "know" about her came from the novel Pillars of the Earth * Powerful women taking charge and flouting male authority * Insightful commentary on both modern and historical female figures * Extremely thorough in historical detail The Not so Good Stuff * Way too scholarly for day to day reading, but a great text for historical information, written in a fascinating way * Very, very dry at times and a little confusing Favorite Quotes/Passages "I know I have the body of a weak and feeble women, but I have the heart and stomach of a king, and of a king of England too - Queen Elizabeth 1, 1588" What I Learned * Fascinating historical information of lesser known female rulers * Way too many interesting tidbits about British history to mention * I always thought that Henry VIII's son, Edward VI, was a weakling all his life Who should/shouldn't read * This is definitely more for the educated scholar than to someone like me * Wonderful resource for high school and public libraries, as it makes history come alive 3 Dewey's I received this from HarperCollins in exchange for an honest review -- sorry guys this one was way over my head
