What is most striking about this little story is, in fact, the narration in itself. Ishiguro composes one of the most interesting narrative voices I have ever come across. The narration is a perfect balance between past and present, memory and “reality”, narrative and dialogue, recollection and fact. A love story, perhaps, interrupted by the duties of a Butler and a Maid in such a high position, in a place where nothing is quite what it seems, or, rather, nothing is quite narrated the way it is. It is hard to tell if it is love or hate what unites Mr. Stevens and Miss Keaton at first, it is hard to tell if what is narrated to the reader is really all there is, or perhaps more… or perhaps even less. What makes The Remains of the Dayso interesting and so especial is, precisely, what is being omitted from the narration. The reader must perform a great effort to grasp what is being told, despite Mr. Steven’s completely sincere and honest approach. The narration is never scattered or ineffective. Stevens may ignore certain events, may perhaps wrongly recollect the dates and times and placing of others, and that is, precisely, what turns this novel into an experiment of sorts. A narration that is so curious and unique and at the same time so successful, is hard to find. It seems to me Ishiguro goes beyond the exploration of a character, a social circle or an historical era. His novels seem to be a perfect execution between humanity, morality and society. What makes us human, and what can deprive us of such a distinction? What, why do we live for, and how do we do it? What makes each individual different from the rest, and does it really matter? In conclusion, The Remains of the Day is, in my opinion, a perfectly executed novel, that is not only a character and social study, but also a study on the narrative voice and how relevant (or perhaps irrelevant) it truly is for the story being exposed. An extremely recommended read.

The text in the back cover promised a lot, but the book didn't really fulfil its expectations. It got actually boring after a while, although I liked the harsh parts of it.

Apparently it can be deciphered through the mediums of cubism and jazz. Oh, right. Of course. In the Skin of a Lion is often heralded as a classic Canadian novel, Michael Ondaatje lauded as a genius.

Ok, ok. I've read it four times. (August 2009) * Earlier this summer, I realized that reading The Brothers K on Peaks Island has been a highlight of the two most recent summers. Since I was planning on a late August solo trip up to Maine anyways, I packed my well-worn copy of this novel and began my slightly insane mission -- to read it again in four days. Well, the sun and water distracted me a bit, but I made it 3/4 of the way through and finished it for the third time this morning (2 September 2008). This most recent reading affected me much more than the previous ones, quite frankly because of the semester I put in at the OE. I understand now why they had us read it before we came [DJD even uses a Simone Weil quote at the beginning of one of the chapters:]. I also have a broader perspective on DJD's writing because I read God Laughs and Plays earlier this summer. The Brothers K is packed full of his thoughts on spirituality and religion, that I wasn't quite as in tuned to the first two times, but I picked it up all over the place this past week. Regardless, this morning, I found myself both laughing and crying [a relatively new emotion for me while reading:] and wishing that summer wasn't over so that I could read it again. Time will tell whether I continue the tradition, but I almost think it would be best to let it be--three summers during college and three reads of The Brothers K!

This was a good follow up to City of Ember, but it was a little slow moving in the beginning. The author took a lot of time to describe the setting and such and I found that a little boring, but I did like the plot, and I am looking forward to reading the third book in the series.

I thought this book was extremely simple and to the point, which for a kids book is good. I loved how there was color association along with the animals. It would be a good book to help teach both of those things.

I have read this book at least half a dozen times in the past decade. I believe that it is the best of all the Bronte novels. Ironic since it is the least well known! A cautionary tale about young love, the novel weaves in mystery as it switches between wild landscapes populated by flinty country people and the luxurious, decadent, and even depraved lives of the spoiled elite. Helen's strength and conviction of character is inspiring. The structure of the story-within-a-story-within-a-story is compelling to read and unusual in 19th century literature.

Wilkie Collins, a close friend of Charles Dickens, is best known for his novels The Woman in White and The Moonstone, and The Haunted Hotel is very similar in its tone and atmosphere. The Countess Narona steals away Lord Montbarry from Abby Lockwood. Despite Abby's forgiving nature, the Countess is convinced that Abby has doomed her to a tragic ending. When Montbarry dies and his courier disappears, Montbarry's family slowly unravels the mystery that is left behind. Collins has a tendency to constantly switch narrators, a technique that is also present here. It can be disconcerting until you meet all the characters and get a feel for each of them. He uses each narrator well, however, as each one is able to fill in parts of the story that the others are not able to. The resolution of The Haunted Hotel is particularly horrific, which is odd, given how simplistic it is compared to the many serial killer and horror novels I've read. The chills come from the total depravity and indifference that the villains exhibit towards the victims and towards each other. The Haunted Hotel is available in many editions; I recommend one that contains Collins' other (very) short stories as well.
