I would give it a 2 1/2 if I could. It's not that bad. . .
LIVE THE LIFE YOU LOVE, AND LOVE THE LIFE YOU LIVE. "We look around at all those who have failed to get what they want and feel that we do not deserve to get what we want either. We forget about all the obstacles we overcame, all the suffering we endured, all the things we had to give up in order to get this far.... ...This is the most dangerous of the obstacles because it has a kind of saintly aura about it: renouncing joy and conquest. But if you believe yourself worthy of the thing you fought so hard to get, then you become an instrument of God, you help the Soul of the World, and you can understand why you are here. "

“The Satanic Verses” is a novel which has been overshadowed by its history. Published in late September of 1988, it was on February 14th in 1989 that a fatwa was issued by the Ayatollah Khomeini against the author Salman Rushdie (Happy Valentine’s Day, Salman). The claim was that the book was very insulting to Muslims, and the controversy itself caused many who had never read the book to issue strong opinions about it. It also had the effect of getting many to buy it that otherwise would not have, and stop people from buying and reading it who otherwise might have. I’m sad to admit that I fall into the latter category, having allowed the controversy to steer me away not only from “The Satanic Verses”, but from all of Salman Rushdie’s works. The loss has been mine. A story dealing with immigration into a different culture, and the loss of faith, the sections which caused the controversy are the dream sequences of a man who believes he is an angel, and even in the sequence which most applies to the prophet then the names are altered, though clearly Mahound is intended to be a representation of the prophet Muhammad, it is a representation which takes place in the dream of a delusional character. So ultimately, the controversy is about a piece of fiction which includes dreams from an unbalanced mind, and that is pretty much all that needs to be said regarding the supposed blasphemy, and of course free speech still allows one to write what one will, so even if it were blasphemy the violent response to it has been nothing short of obscene. I found “The Satanic Verses” a difficult read as I struggled with some of his terms, and the narrative structure. It is a very complex storyline, and though I suspect I only picked up on a small part of the totality of what Rushdie included, it was well worth the effort, and this is a book which I will be re-reading in a few years to see what I missed the first time through. I also will be correcting my mistake of not reading any of Rushdie’s other works as I see no reason to deprive myself of such great works simply because others found offense. The book is comic, with biting commentary not only on religion, but on politics and the secular and capitalistic west. The story is about two Indian actors that are miraculously saved after their plane is blown up by terrorists. One (Gibreel) comes to believe he is an angel), and the other (Saladin) transforms into a devil. The title itself does refer to a controversy early story from the early days of Islam. The story is about the devil tricking Muhammad into indicating that the worship of three pagan goddesses was allowed, but later learning from Gabriel that the devil had tricked him with a false recitation, i.e. a Satanic Verse.

This was one of the best books I have ever read. Between the original narration and extreme ability to evoke emotion in its' readers, this book was one of a kind. I have read one other book by Zusak and am hooked. However, when I went to the bookstore to check out more of his work, I was disappointed to find him in the Teen Fiction section, with only one other, not too interesting, novel as a choice. Hopefully he will have more interesting books in the future. The Book Thief is a book that has the ability to shape our generation. The only pro to this being in the Teen section, is that hopefully it will get today's youth reading books such as The Book Thief as opposed to Romance novels or the Twilight books. This is the kind of book that can seriously leave an impression on your life and I will highly suggest it to everyone I know.
I realize this is a classic of English literature, but I could never get past the fact that none of the characters were likable, or showed any signs of change or redemption. It was just multi-generational misery. The one upside I had was getting to visit the moors where Wuthering Heights was written while reading the book. It's a very dramatic, brooding landscape... and made it easier to see why Emily Bronte would reflect those same themes in her writing. Still wasn't enough to win me over to the book, though.
I learned that there is so much the 3 faiths have in common. Interpetations of many kinds of kind of muddled everything regarding Abraham and his place in the story of these 3 great religions. Personally, I find the story of Abraham from Genesis to be disappointing and hypicrital of what I was taught to be rightous.

I have changed my review mostly because of recent input by a priest form Rome who was Mother Teresa's confessor. He not only doesn't like this book but requests that none of the misionaries of charity read it. It is not part of their recommended reading. I have to respect his better understanding of Mother Teresa and what she really felt.

It’s not a secret that I love this series and this book is not an exception! The familiar world of the Chicagoland vampires is back and I enjoyed every minute reading this book! I have the impression that this book is the most fast-paced in the series. I really liked it because it has equal moments of adventure, romance and humor. It’s a very balanced book. In this story vampires are not the only players. Magic and angels are here too and they succeed to make an amazing story. Merit is more mature here. She is a very different person from the beginning of the series and I have to admit that she does all the hard job in this story! Once a scholar, now she is a fighter and she does her best to protect the house that she belongs. Ethan is as hot/smart/alpha man/protective/brave as always. He’s trying very hard to accept his new reality and he’s doing just fine. In this book he is able to see that Merit is a very changed person and now he wants her even more, although sometimes he doesn’t let her be close to him because he is afraid of hurting her. As always the world-building is amazing, both the main and the secondary characters are great and the story very well-written. I am looking forward to read the next one!
