Had to read this book twice or thrice. Just keep getting more out of it each time. My copy is tattered and literally falling apart. I first noticed this on the bookshelf of my uber-cool Social Studies professor during senior yr in high school. He encouraged me to read the original archery one first to get a better understanding of the roots upon which this is generally based. At least our western interpretation. Then there's the whole "Quality" craze of the 90's in business and society as a whole which this exemplifies, however colorful the medium may be. Perhaps an ancestor of "Who moved my cheese".

He is too fascinating a man, and has left far too large an imprint on modern Singapore history for this to be an uninteresting book. Having lived through many of the climactic moments surrounding the foundation of the modern Singapore state, this first volume of memoirs would have value in itself as a historical account of what happened. Still, one gets the sense in reading this of a didactic lecturer not seeking justification - he never has felt the need - but closer to that of a stern father instructing his wayward children. One gets the sense that the events, his personal image and everything else is presented through a very particular and finely polished patina. This is sad, as all too often, what lies beneath is far more interesting.

I liked this book a lot. Set in Berlin between 1922 and 1936,the heroine's tone of voice was witty & well-written. Having just finished Fall of Giants about WWI and the German/Russian historical events leading up to it, the historical background of this book is very germane. Scary too as it leads toward WWII . The element of suspense has you sitting on the edge of your seat.

Great book to read late at night, which keeps you paranoid and not able to fall asleep. This book gives a description of a multitude of events that could all lead to the end of the world before the end of this century. Whether it's advances in nanotechnology, political unrest mixed with nuclear weapons or environmental disaster, make your bets as to which one will do us all in...

Sometimes preachy, and plotted in a stiff manner (Character A will meet character B, which leads him to meet character C, etc), Jim Powell's The Breaking of Eggs still manages to entertain with a tale of a man who is slowly watching the belief he had in Eastern Europe's communist states fade as he revisits his past. The lack of emotion may be intentional; the character is cool and logical and confronts problems with ideological rigidity (at first). It was a good read, went fairly quickly, drew me in enough.

Whenever I search dystopia, this book comes up. However, I don't believe I have ever actually physically seen this book. It seems obscure, but I am still interested in it due to my "collecting" of books with this theme.

This is one of my favorites. I read re-read it every few years. I loved it the first time I read it in school, and going back, Holden still makes me laugh.

I read this book a couple years ago and feel like it would be a good thing to read it again! It has great marraige advice and pointers!
