I really liked this story. It was a story about a man who showed his wife that there is more than outer beauty to a person and how they fell in love with each other. this was a very powerful story.

Imperium is another great book of historical fiction set in ancient Rome. I enjoyed it quite as much as the Conn Iggulden Caesar books, though they are quite different and even portray Caesar in a very different light. This book and series focus on Cicero and provide tremendous insight into the political works of the Roman state. Cicero is an interesting character and in this book we trace the early stages of his career. The mechanism of the book is interesting in itself. Cicero's slave and confidential secretary is the narrator. While a character himself, inventing shorthand and even engaging in a plot near the end of the story, his involvement in the plot is extremely minimal, being mostly in Cicero's shadow. This leads to a feel similar to a limited third person telling of a story, but with a much more personal touch as the character shares impressions and feelings. I look forward to the second book in the series.

another classic from my childhood, also in the vein of being sad and life lessons of death, but combined with a strongly optimistic outliook on finding the joys in life and living fully.

quite a bit different from the movie
Surprisingly, this last book in the series was my least favorite of the five. Usually I like final books because I'm a big fan of closure, but this one was slow moving and hard to get into. Overall, I really enjoyed these five books and would definitely recommend them. They are very funny and it is just really easy to like Maddie as a character (though I was a little disappointed in her weird relationship with Felix in the last book). I will be keeping watch out for Gemma Halliday's next series that focuses on Felix as the main character.

Great book for those like me who had anxiety before c-section!
Another hilarious few hundred pages from Mr. Birmingham, this time on the subject of all things male. As the title suggests, it reads like a how to guide, with sections on everything from how to dress properly for business, how to buy, drive and maintain a car, and even how to cook with the specific intent of impressing a woman. If you find any of this sexist or offensive, then you're missing the point, this is meant to be funny. Oh, and it also includes emergency instructions on how to land a 747 jumbo jet, in case you ever find yourself in that particular situation. That alone is worth the price.

I was flitting about the internet at 3am and stumbled across the full text of The Old Man and the Sea, so I decided to read it instead of sleep. To be quite honest, I would've been better off just going to bed. It was interesting, and the middle part with the sharks created a somewhat sickening but kind of awesome picture in my head... but now I've hit my second wind so I won't be able to sleep til 4 this afternoon, and I think I have to work at 5pm.
ahhh one of my very favorite books! I just loved Miri and all the other characters a truly magical book! (:
