Konrath has a style all his own, mixing humor with horror and all the elements of a good suspense or thriller novel into a police procedural. The horror (just as with his Joe Kilborn pen name) isn’t in-your-face. It’s subtle, often implied leaving a lot to your imagination, yet no less horrific. If you’ve read and liked any of the previous books in the Jack Daniels series you’ll like Shaken. One of the things I especially liked was seeing Jack, Herb (her current partner) and Harry (her first partner) change over time. I'm sorry that I have to yell, but THIS IS THE BEST BOOK I'VE READ IN THE LAST THREE YEARS!!! I put off reading it because time travel in fiction makes me nervous (I'm always afraid that the characters are going to get caught, or stuck in the wrong time, or fuck up the space-time continuum or something), and also because there was something in the blurb that says they first met when he's 36 and she's 6 (you know, because he time travels) and I thought that was a little nasty and wrong, but the way it happens in the book is not at all pervy. What this book is, however, is Fan-damn-tastic! Henry is a librarian (!!!) who likes the punk rock (he even beats someone up outside of a Smoking Popes show in 1991), and he is in love with Clare who is kind and good and lovely, but everything is hard because when he gets stressed out he gets sucked somewhere else in time. It probably doesn't hurt that my head Henry looks like a cross between Adrian Brody and Dr. McDreamy and Joe from Kavalier and Clay, but anywhoo . . . It's a beautiful love story that made me cry for like a half an hour, and that hasn't happened since I read A Prayer for Owen Meany in high school. And I know it's like 500 pages, but you must suck it up already and READ IT!

Previous to this, I had only read a few Hemingway short stories in high school & college, but I've always loved his life story and his writing (and his cats). I had this romantic notion of Hemingway in my head and when I had the chance to read this book, I couldn't wait to open its pages. It was so simple and beautiful: a love story written amidst the horror and devastation of war. The one thing that really sold me on Hemingway (again) was the ending; I'm all for the unexpected, none-resolving ending. It would never fly in film, but that's the greatest part of a book--you don't need a happy ending. Definitely worth four stars, maybe even four and a half, but that's not an option.

I was surprised at the ease of reading this book; and I'm not sure how I ever missed that this book was ABOUT BOOKS. A wonderful treatise on how we can be influenced by books ... and other things ... in our lives. Ray Bradbury's look at the future from several decades ago, seems to have been quite clear ... and so accurate. Although a bit strange, as expected from Bradbury, it was also fun, extremely thought-provoking, and sometimes disturbing. All in all, everything I look for in a good book.

I wasn't expecting to like this book. It was one of two books up for this month to read for a group I recently joined, and neither one of them sounded that interesting. But I chose this one because I preferred the cover. Yeah, yeah... From the description, I thought it would be preachy and moralistic and ... you know, one of those books with an agenda where the actual story is secondary. But that is totally not the case. This book is very well written and makes excellent use of the dual narrator technique, switching back and forth between Lavinia, who is young, innocent and naive, and Belle, who is older and hasn't been spared the tragedies of the world. To Belle, it is obvious that the biggest difference between the two of them is that Belle is half black and a slave, whereas Lavinia is white and an indentured servant who ended up that way as an orphan. Lavinia doesn't realize that different colors mean anything (having grown up to the ripe old age of 7 in Ireland, she was presumably spared the brainwashing), and she views Belle (and the other slaves) as her family. Lavinia is often spared the truth to save her innocence. When she asks questions about things happening around her, people often reply that she will find out soon enough, and don't explain. But she never does figure it out on her own, and the lack of knowledge leads her to make some decisions that change everyone's lives forever. To be honest, most of the things in this book are caused because people refuse to be honest with each other, or don't push the issue and tell things that need to be told. (view spoiler) There are other cases of this as well, but these are the big plot-important ones. In the end, I found all the characters to be likable at some point during the book (well, except Rankin and the tutor...) and even felt a little bad for Marshall, although I have to admit I am REALLY unclear about his motives for his choice of wife. He had SEEN how she interacted with everyone in the past - did he really expect this to change? Some parts of the book were really, really awful, and brought up strong emotions with me. Lots of violence, often of a sexual nature (but not always). There was an awful lot of death. I'm impressed with the author's research, especially dealing with current events in the time period, and I enjoyed reading the different dialects. Definitely recommend reading this one at least once.

4.5 Not reviewing it yet because this is a "beginning" book for a multi-book series. It's good, but it doesn't really complete an arc so I'm going to rate each book and do a review at the end of the series. So far so good, though. :)

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Rob's story. It is an honest but sometimes humorous look into his life. A Midwest boy who rose to fame rapidly during the 1980s and experienced all the excess of the times. It's a story of a rise and fall and then pulling yourself up and starting over. It makes me want to watch his movies and the West Wing all over again to try and capture some of the real life production stories from the book.
