Overall I thought this book was a good read. The writer Markus Zusak did a very good job with I Am the Messenger. This book is about a misfit cab driver named Ed Kennedy. After a bank robbery he begins to get cards with people he has to help on them. Then his life completely changes. If you like suspenseful action books this is the one for you.

This book was NOT what I expected at all. I've been avoiding it because I thought the story was about censorship, and I've had my fill of the censorship discussion already. Although the fictional society censors books, that is an appendage to the plot. It's really the story of a society in conflict: a mad duke is in charge of a city, his sister and several guilds are vying for power--and in the thick of it is Mosca, a 12ish year old runaway. The plot is a combination of Dickensian twists (and characters) and a sort of Lemony Snicket love of words (without the repetition and slow pace). I enjoyed the unique names: Eponymous Clent, Hopewood Pertellis...saints/gods such as Goodman Grenoble of Keeping Knots out of Moustachios. For all of its silliness, the book has a dark plot: several groups vying to take over a city, each with an apparently sinister agenda. Mosca loves words and can read (a rarity among the common people)and she is employed as a spy. I love the descriptions of the city and the places in it (especially some of the coffeehouses on the river). I think 12 year olds and older would appreciate the book: the political intrigue might be difficult for children younger than that to follow.

I love his account of his fellow hiker's behavior. The guy starts throwing potentially valuable items down the side of the mountain in a fit of anger. I have so been there! I always ask for the food in my pack when we hike the AT because I know there'll be less of it when we're done.

I didn't like this at first, but no matter what I kept picking the story back up to read. It was impossible to leave the characters and their stories. I love this book even though it brought out painful memories. I will definitely watch for this author and recommend this book. I've already been recommending it to friends and plan on recommending it to my book club.
