Loved this book. Beautiful story, beautiful writing, beautiful execution of a book. While this novel would probably have taken me a day or less to read on a weekend, I took it with me for company on my train commutes, to brighten my day. Reading it was like drinking a cup of tea or coffee that you want to enjoy for as long as possible. Perfectly lovely, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a gorgeous read. Additional about the film: while I definitely preferred the book, I thought that the movie captured the feeling of the novel quite well, despite making it a tad too romantic for my taste. It was excellently cast, and I would watch it again, despite its differences from the book.

I don't think I ever read this before but I have a rating for it. I'm reading it with my 13 year-old son (he's competing in a reading competition in school). Very cool mystery with some aspects of horror. I was a little surprised at the huge chunk of the book that didn't feature Holmes at all. More importantly my son liked it a lot and is now very interested in the most recent show featuring a modern Holmes. Unfortunately we only have 3 episodes on Netflix and he's watched all those.

A case of mistaken identity wins a young man all that he wished for.
Lorrie Moore is one of my favorite contemporary authors (probably first on my list of authors I'd most like to emulate). I find short stories especially impressive because anyone can develop characters and plot in hundreds of pages, but it takes a special gift to deliver such depth in just a few pages. Moore has incredible insight and her mix of wit and poignancy makes for a wonderful read! "Agnes of Iowa," "Which is More Than I Can Say About Some People," "People like that are the only people here; canonical babbling in peed onk," and "Real Estate" are not to be missed!

In een achttal satirische, vulgaire schetsen beschrijft L.H.A. L.H.A. 9,5/10

Maybe good for a lapsit storytime with a boy, but I'm always thinking in storytime mode and this story does nothing for me. Sometimes I use wordless books for "What do you think will happen next?" but that doesn't really work for this one, because the answer is "the truck keeps driving" after every page. By all means, however, good for boys to look at and learn the text on the illustrations on their own time.

The ultimate bachelor party!! This book follows the week long (!!) bachelor party in wine country, complete with drinking, madcap adventures, and loose women. Most of this book I liked- but some of the "situations" the characters find themselves in are a little unbelievable. I think it you're a "guy's guy" this book is going to speak to you, being a "girlie girl" this book kind of felt like a waste of time.

First let me clarify - that's 4.5 stars. =) This was a wonderful book. At first I wasn't sure where it was headed, even though I know that all of Jodi Picoult's books are headed to the court room. I thought, not for the first time with one of Picoult's books, that there was a lot of religion - A Lot but unlike Change of Heart, this one didn't really rub me wrong or come off as too preachy - it needed to be there. I thought Picoult did a fantastic job of covering all the viewpoints in every topic discussed. A well thought out novel with a wonderful ending. Definite recommend!

Horribly flawed, tough to get through, but a very rewarding ending. You can definitely see when John Irving's style comes from although its not perfected yet. He also experiments with different forms, that being his ultimate downfall. The novel loses steam in the middle when he goes back in time in a diary setting. Some of it is insightful, some is just unneccessary to the plot. However, Irving's strengths are still the same. He creates wonderful characters and brings them to life. The other reason I gave this 4 stars despite the difficulty of getting through it is that the book creates wonderful European landscapes and scenes as the animals escape the zoo. Also, it shows a much more youthful and maybe naively optimistic view towards life and watches as that view changes. Less ridiculous fun than other Irving novels, but more emotional.
