this was a fun story. It was a little mushy sweetness at times, but over all it was cute:)

I've read all three in the series...they're great!

I really love and hate different parts of this book. There are certain "chapters" (really, short-stories), that I think are wonderful: Found Objects, Safari, and the completely innovative and impressive Great Rock & Roll Pauses and Where to Find Them by Allison Blake. HOWEVER, the last chapter really threw off the entire tone of the work and ruined it for me. A story about a prognosticated future does not fit in a work of realistic fiction. I'm not sure exactly what Egan was attempting to accomplish with that story, but I honestly think the book would be far stronger and far better without it. Still, the book is obviously worth reading, though I might even go so far as to suggest that potential readers DO NOT read the last story/chapter and just ignore its existence, as it will do nothing but sour their experience with the work.
perfect.

Brilliant. But read the Hobbit first before you delve into this series.
This book was great! It is a retelling of Jane Eyre in a futuristic/sci-fi setting. I loved it.

I've loved The Hobbit since I was six and LotR since I was a teen.
"At the Bronx Zoo years ago a lion and a tiger were milk brothers. Lions and tigers hail from Africa and Asia respectively, and would fight if they met. In the zoo these two were close. Neither had ever seen himself, only the other. Each had looked at the other for as long as he would remember. So the lion thought he was a tiger, as it were, and he feared adult lions. The tiger feared adult tigers. Only in the face of the other did each find home."

Wow. Very, very good and amazing. I liked it soooooooo much better than the other Dave Eggers book I read. Very good, very powerful, but not, as I'd feared, so intense that it would make me miserable. I'm very impressed by Dave Eggers. Do not think it was lost on us that the Kenyans, and every international body that monitors or provides for the displaced, customarily places its refugees in the least desirable regions on earth. There we become utterly dependent -- unable to grow our own food, to tend our own livestock, to live in any sustainable way. I do not judge the UNHCR or any nation that takes in the nationless, but I do pose the question. --Schools will be yours! he roared. We cheered. --You will be the best-educated Sudanese in all of history! he yelled. Bewildered, we cheered again. --Now we will build the schools! We cheered again, but soon the cheering died down. It dawned on us that the task would come down to us.

Just what I was pining for...a good old time bashing heads with my favorite special forces psycho trained killer turned affable marine biologist, Doc Ford... Not the best in the series, not the worst...mostly good times...
