This was a decent book, tense and interesting with good, familiar characters. But I found it a little complicated, things that were never quite explained well enough to satisfy me. Which isn't always a bad thing, because generally I like complicated and I like challenging to understand. But this felt vague, like Catherine Fisher didn't really understand the intricate details of the things she was weaving together and the mythology she was creating and drawing from so couldn't explain it well. Maybe I'm wrong but there's usually a different feel to books where the author knows things they leave unexplained and when they don't really delve deep enough into their story to understand it well enough to really write it. Also the ending was rather abrupt, there weren't any loose in but everything was wrapped up in two pages and then it was done. I would have liked the resolution drawn out and enjoyed as much as some of the descriptions. But Fisher has created an interesting world and engaging characters so it's still a good book and fun to read.

I found this book both entertaining and delightful. The concept was original and the author was able to help the reader connect personally with her two main characters and their plight.

Wonderfully uplifting and inspiring book! I just wanted to try harder to be a better person after reading this. I am amazed at how loving and Christlike President Monson is. He is the epitomy of charity. What a great example he is to all. There is also a lot of interesting church history in this book, particularly the era of the church in communist East Germany. I found it fascinating how the church was able to establish roots there and even get a temple dedicated there while it was still under communist control. Great read!

This book feels almost epic in the sense that it does span three generations, though it is focussed mainly on the third. Lyle tells his story to Mr. Terrieux who saved 16 yr old Matthew Pit from drowning. The events of Lyle's life happened because Mat Pit survived and his actions subsequently impacted Lyle's family. It's the story of poverty, comparing poverty of money and poverty of love. It is utterly tragic in so many ways, even though there's always the glimmer of hope, the belief that the hero(s) will rise up against the bad guys. How heroes rise, how bad guys fall, is also a focus of the story. It's easy, yet spellbinding prose that keeps you reading effortlessly. The characters seem to be caricatures, yet you can't but realize (and sorrow for this) that they are not caricatures and that people like this really exist.

The way that Capote writes is very fun and energetic. I love it. It makes me want to read more of his work. His characters are intriguing and very original. I cannot wait to see the very famous movie and compare the similarities and differences to the book.

fascinating and well written, though somewhat contrived in the end
Comfortable and familiar, like all the past books in the series. If you didn't like the series, there's no way you'd be at book 8, so really, this is one for the fans.
