Liked it. A little aggravated by the lack of character development, but hey, it's intended for kids up through about 12.

This was bull eye of hitting good thing in the sea of homoerotica. There are several reasons why 1. two handsome men in the historical setting, 2. sex with hint of BDSM, 3. plot there is a plot and it does not affect the whole book, 4. it was funny kind of plot, 5. the book was short but thick with action, 6. I learn new English word - ballock. Two lords, both second sons so without obligation to produce heir and rather being overlooked by their fathers were the main characters of the book. Oliver was in love, his love was all desperate to the man who even did not know that Oliver felt towards him in such way. Vincent was successful , rich and loved by society but he had dark secret which could bring him to the gallows. He simply loved men. There was one refugee for him a brothel where he could indulge his ways. Oliver found that one and set cunning plan, which brought the most interesting talk about love and sexuality, which I have ever read in such kind of literature. The ending was, yes very happy indeed. Oliver found his man and his man found truth about himself.
I just found out that Orson Scott Card is a bigot against homosexual rights and is on the board for the "National Organization for Marriage." He claims he's not a homophobe, but if the Manolo Blahniks fit.... Because of these bigoted views, I'm boycotting anything Orson Scott Card touches, at least on any level he can profit from. That doesn't mean I won't read his stuff, but it'll be from the library, when his stuff has already been purchased, and no new money changes hands.

I received this book for Christmas and haven't put it down since. The recipes are spot on (and that's even with substituting gluten-free flour for the regular) and the cupcakes are so wonderfully photographed that half the time I open the book, it's simply to check out the pictures.

The first in a triology involving Sally Lockheart. Set in the 1880's Victorian London and deals with the efforts of a 16 year old, Sally, to discover the meanings of certain phrases as she seeks to learn about her father's death. In the process, she learns who she is as she unravels the mystery of her father's death. She is aided by a band of friends she makes along the way. Story revolves around unraveling the mystery of the ruby, and deals with British shipping, the opium trade, and two villians: one who overtly threatens Sally's exisitence while the other is a lurking shadow in the background. The story is more young adult, but still an interesting read.

This was an odd book - both enjoyable and yet read like the script for an Indian movie. It won the Booker in 2006 and had a leading plug by Salman Rushdie. There were parts I really enjoyed but the underlying sadness and frustration of the novel (hence its title) made it hard to read at times. The comedy was usually followed by some bad thing and sometimes it worked and sometimes not. What I enjoyed was the slow pace she used to describe some of the background stories mixed up between other events. I did find the story of Biju, man who went to America was heart-breaking and the failed love of the main character Sai equally hard to taken. Even more hard to read is the background of the Judge, Sia's grandpa and the story of his wife. Yes, realism interspersed with such quirky events made the story twist and oddly believable. Tragedy makes a good Indian tale? Perhaps the events of India today makes the stories even more real.
Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim had me giggling for hours and Me Talk Pretty One Day was riotous enough to keep enough the toughest of my students glued to their grammar exercises. So the expectations were soaring for Holidays on Ice. All of which fell flat on their faces when I realized that the holiday season apparently brings out the whiny, bitchy Queen in Sedaris. I can't really stand snotty children and overbearing parents either, and yeah, it really sucks to be stuck in a spot chirping cheery good wishes when you desperately need a smoke and a double espresso. But it's the holidays! And shit happens! And these stories are supposed to be funny. But they're not. Don't bother with this one.
