the copy that i rread was orriginally published in 1978, which makes it's description of the perception of cancer out of date. nonetheless it's a good insight into the potential stages of illness perception and a good insight to the potential spaces around disease and illness when working with people/patients wo might have grrown up during/before the writing of this text as it illuminates a the social norms that potentially had an impact on them. in another note, keep an eye out for the annie leibovitz etrospective (1990-2005) which is currently in san diego, making its way to altanta and sf. features pictures of sontag (among many many others) including during her fight with cancer.

Step on a Crack was not a good book, it did not bring me into the story until the end. I was told it was a good book and i guess i expected a little too much. This book is about the presidents wife dying and at her funeral all the famous people get kidnapped. The kidnappers do have a successful escape. although i said i did not like this book it did however have a good ending.

I've always wanted to read this book, but you have to be in the right mood to tackle this material. I finally found myself in a willing spirit, and then my determination to finish this book before I die carried me through. My thoughts are as follows: 1 - Why is Thoreau so whiny?! Seriously. 2 - Why is Thoreau such a jerk? (I would use stronger language here, but I'll refrain.) A lot of his arguments for living the way he did for 2 years fell flat since they went kind of like this: "I live better than you. You know why? Cause I do. And I'd know because I'm a philosopher and that means I think about stuff better than you think about stuff." Whatever. I rolled my eyes a lot. I know people who talk like this in real life, and I don't like those people. 3 - There are kernels of wisdom in here. They weren't worth a book-length read. 4 - He obviously has a much higher regard for himself and his writing skills than I do. I don't like it when an author's arrogance shows through. It's hard for me to stomach. Having said all that, I like the experiment he ran. I like the minutiae, the isolation, the love of Nature, all of that. I just wasn't as into it as he was. In fact, it made me realize that although I'm one to celebrate the simplicity of someone's life and look for the small things, there's a point where minutiae becomes tedium. So you can go ahead and skip this book. In fact, I'd recommend that. I had much more love for Thoreau before reading Walden than after. And that's a shame.

Good start to the Fafhrd and Gray Mouser series. A bit slow at first, but it picks up pace in the second and third stories.

As the hairstyles on the front suggest, this is a little outdated, and thankfully so--lots of discussion so far on the now-improved-but-not-perfect legal structures for protecting our families. I haven't gotten to the longitudinal study yet, but I'm glad there's one out there.

This was a hard read for me, because that girl had the gift of gab that drove me up the wall. The author was able to annoy the heck out of me with her writing. All in all, the book turned out to be pretty good.

These are absolutely hilarious parodies of pop culture and academia! The Iron Prof; Kant's Critique of Pure Reason made into a movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Salma Hayek, directed by Ron Howard; the advice columns -- you will howl with laughter!

This is another book on the top five Canadian Novels of the decade. It is a wonderful story about family and mothers coping with difficult situations that they can't fix no matter how much they love their children. I'm wondering how or what I would do if a child of mine decided to live on the street. The oldest of three sisters chooses to live on the street and the younger sisters visit every Saturday and sit with her. I think Carol Shields should be as notable as Alice Hoffman, Margaret Atwood and Joyce Carol Oates. She died a couple years after this book was published. I love it so far. I finished the book yesterday and there was a surprise ending but that isn't what made the book so enjoyable for me. I love books that have interesting and likable people flaws and all. Carol Shields writes in a way that draws you in to root for her characters. This is not a page turner meaning that you read so fast just to see what happens; you want to read the nuance and feeling of each event.
