My sister read this ages ago and never bothered to read the sequel, which was why I didn't pick it up even though I've felt curious about it since the first time I saw it. Then I received it as a Christmas gift and I LOVED IT. It's a great story that really made me think about body image and media influence. (Turned out that that was exactly why my sister didn't pick up the next book, lol.)

A bit metafiction, a bit action/adventure, a bit character drama... a bit weird really. A decent read though.

Based on all the hype about this book, I was really expecting more. The actual life story was good, but I didn't like how it was presented. The first few chapters dragged on. I didn't get really interested in the book until about page 180. After that, the story got much better but still wasn't all I was expecting. There were so many characters mentioned and most weren't explored fully so they were very forgetful. I think it would have been interesting to bring in more of Louis' thoughts and feelings, rather than just a telling of the events of his life.

Genre: YA, sci-fi I listened to this book. I am Number Four is an OK read. Neil Kaplan narrates; he does an OK job. His female characterizations leave much to be desired.
An amazingly fun read, especially for books lovers. This is probably my favorite so far in the Thursday Next series. There are so many things I want to quote, but you'll love them so much more when you encounter them yourself. In addition to copious book-related references throughout, Fford infuses the book with subtle references to current events. I can't resist sharing this one... Book World has been transformed into a geographic location, with genres divided up like countries. One of the central themes of the book is the upcoming peace talks that Thursday is set to negotiate. Women's Literature and Racy Novel are on the brink of war. Nearby Comedy is worried that its province called Bawdy Romp will get dragged into the fray. As the written Thursday is traveling through a checkpoint, she notices that certain people are being profiled for additional pat-downs and scrutiny -- men with their shirts open to their navels and women in mini-skirts. Man, I love this book.

This Book is an okay book because it talks about someone's factional life and in the story sometimes people have this life that when they have to get used to and stuff like that... thats all I could say about this book.

I was really excited when I picked up this book at the library. I've had a thing for Edith Head for a long time, so I was looking forward to finding out more about her. Reading it was a mixed experience. There were parts that were fascinating - the intrigue and machinations behind the scenes were great fun to read about. At the same time, a better editor (or perhaps just a final edit?) is needed - there are 5 or 6 passages that are used almost verbatim several times, in separate places in the book. Also, the flow of the book is a little scattered. At times, it seemed to be almost more like a string of stream of consciousness vignettes than a coherent story. I frequently found myself having to go back several paragraphs or pages to figure out who a particular person was. The nature of the book is such that many of the names were unfamiliar to me - not being a Old Hollywood geek, I don't know the names of all of the designers/assistants/minor starlets right off hand. That being said, I completely understand that it's not a book guaranteed to appeal to everyone - so the intended audience might be much more familiar with these people than I am. There was a nice set of color picture inserts, along with some sketches of particular outfits interspersed throughout the book. It would have been nice to have a lot more of these - but there well might have been copyright/legal issues with that. Overall, pretty solid. I'm considering getting Edith's own book, The Dress Doctor, as it was referenced in this book. Apparently you're to read it with a grain of salt, as a bunch of stuff was made up.
