King has a least two 'series' sets going, one following Mary Russel--the one-time protege of Sherlock Holmes, who now appears as her husband--and one following an SFPD cop from the 1990s, who happens to be a dyke and who happens to be hilarious. Now, in A Darker Place, she introduces a new protagonist (Anne Waverly), but does so in a way that makes it seem as if she's already written at least three books about her. The references to this character's past are so elaborate, so detailed, and yet their brevity suggests the author assumes that, well, if we haven't already read those books, we just might as well. This trope--of nods towards shared knowledge--appears as a plot point as well. Early on, Anne speaks with Steven Change, the leader of a religious community ('not a cult') who plays some of the "oh, look how holy I am" games. King describes Waverly's response as: "To give the impression of omniscience, a person had only to pick up some small clue (a slight limp or a wariness toward the community) and present it casually as a known fact with long-understood implications." Of course, this being a mystery thriller, the issues of who-knows-what and how-they-come-to-know-that come to hold the bulk of the dynamic tension. The manner in which King both highlights these issues, with the elaborate backstories, and holds them up to the light to show how fragile they are, with the slight derision of one character's pompousness, is something I've never seen before now.

This is my favorite of the Boarding House Trilogy by Vickie. It is filled with humor and honor. The characters reach out and grab you from the very beginning! A Must read!!

Luce's boyfriend is an angel. There are good angels and bad angels, some are after her and I'm not sure why. It was kindof a mess, but it kept me reading until the end.

I really enjoyed this book. Maupin is a master at writing dialogue. It's a very simple story but it pulled me in and I couldn't the book down.

This is the second book I've read by Dixie Cash, and I have to say, they're something of a sinful pleasure! There's not really any redeeming social or literary quality to these books, but they're so much fun! These would be great beach or airport reads. They contain a little bit of mystery, a lot of romance, and even more Southern sass! I highly recommend Dixie Cash for a quick, easy read.

Sad,sad book. I loved the tone of Tale of Despereaux (sad but sweetly hopeful), but this one broke my heart.

I didn't care for the narrator, which made things drag.

Nothing like a good romance every once in a while. The beginning left me a little sceptical but once I got past that, it ended up being a pretty OK story. Don't read if you are offended by love scenes. They're pretty descriptive.

I've read this book before, but I didn't remember that until I started reading it again. I don't think I've read the whole series though. As I plan on continuing I guess I'll find out. This is a story about Flint of outworld. He Is a caveman of high intelligence, with an eidetic memory, and most importantly a kirilian aura of 200. A kirilian aura is often compared to a soul in the book and that is the easiest way to describe it. He is recruited by the government of Sol to stop the andromedan menace by giving other clusters of planets the ability to transfer ther Kirilian Aura into Host bodies. It's an interesting book, very Conan the barbarian in a way. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
