Interesting, I liked the Hyde Park angle.

TURNABOUT is a tough one for me to rate.. this book fell victim to bad timing for me. I started reading it just as my life got hectic (planning my twin boys 4th birthday party) and although I found the idea of un-ageing intriguing, the story it's self wasn't interesting enough to hold my attention over all the other craziness in my own life. Evidence shown in that it took me like a week to get through such a short book, that I would normally breeze through in one sitting before bed. Anyhow to be fair to the author, this was a good read, not an exciting, fantastic, edge of your seat read, but a good comfortable easy read. Basically its about group of nursing home patients in Kentucky, that at the end of their life are given a trial drug that will reverse the aging process.. essentially they will stop ageing and start growing younger. The story follows two of the patients through their second life as they "un-age" into the year 2085. TURNABOUT is a cool idea and a good book, but for me, Haddix missed out on the potential for a fantastic read. I wish the story had gone further into the actual second lives of the two main characters, instead of just hinting at bits and pieces.

“And Then He Kissed Her”… And so he did. And it was the most important part of this book. It was like being fourteen again. It was like living in Victorian times. The plot is what it is. There is an old spinster (by 19th century standards so approaching thirty), a secretary to a rakish viscount who doesn’t even notice her until she throws a tantrum, quits, and subsequently transforms herself into some Victorian Martha Stewart. She knows all about etiquette and how to throw a party that will be the talk of the season but soon to her utter horror she realises that there are things one can do on a kitchen table that are a lot more fun. So there goes Martha Stewart, enter a wanton. In time the viscout and our spinster will discover they actually do love each other and all will be well, as it always is in romance novels. This is not what is important here. What is important here is that insane sensuality. In our desensitised twenty-first century world it is so difficult to get excited over little things. We need more and more to arouse us and Ms Guhrke brings it back to basics. He touches her hip and you feel it in your stomach. He kisses her palm and you get dizzy. This is, ladies and gentlemen, what I’m talking about. This is why Pride and Prejudice will continue to be universally loved because all fifty of Grey’s shades won’t get you going like that one scene when Mr Darcy walks out of the lake in a wet shirt and runs into Lizzy. This is not one of those romances with a sex scene every ten pages that you almost end up skimming over them, it’s only in-out, in-out. This is more of a crackling electricity kind. I loved it.

Very inspired
This book gives an amazing look at the lives of young people in Afghanistan. The main character was born with a cleft lip and palate and we witness the cruelty of others that she has to endure. Her older sister is very beautiful but she is not at all jealous of her sister and they have a very strong, loving bond. I loved learning about the lives and customs of the people living in this country. I especially liked reading about the wedding preparations of the sister and all the traditions that go into that ceremony.

This collection has some stunning stories in it. My only complaint is that some of the stories stretched or were outside the boundaries of "fantasy of manners." I must temper that complaint with the acknowledgment that some of the stories that didn't fit the premise of the anthology were among my favorites.

Odd. Brilliant and odd. A book of family, survival, endless self-analysis, and the beauty that can be found in irony and self-deprication.

I loved this book. I thought it was exactly what NPR said (paraphrasing): an escape that doesn't lose any literary elegance. The character development and detailed descriptions of the environment were done in such a beautiful way that I was really transported to Manaus. I'm not one for science, the jungle, or fertility drugs, but like her other novel I loved (Patron Saint of Liars), the subject matter is secondary to Patchett's ability to create a wonderful story.

A more informational, research-based version of Nickeled and Dimed (the editor's more popular book), with essays by various researchers. Like many similar books, you are left with a bit of a "you can't win" taste - is it better to hire someone in a means that could be exploitative, or to not hire them? Are people taken advantage of more if hired through agencies or individually? Etc. The biggest thing I remember about the book was the irony of economic systems that make it necessary for women to work as nannies in other countries in order to earn enough money to support their children, yet having to leave them behind in the process.
