As T.J. sits in the hospital waiting room, anxious for news about his sister Angela, who has suffered a fall, he reflects on their life. "Now" they are adjusting to being recently adopted and fitting in with their new parents, but "then," they lived with their mother and her series of boyfriends, with T.J. acting much more like an adult than his mother as he tried to keep himself and his sister safe. As he reflects on his life and worries about his sister, T.J. comes to realize what he wants from life. This is a touching, thought-provoking story. Told alternately between "now" and "then," it takes readers through the children's lives, as they craved their mother's love and attention but could never quite rely on her, and their struggles to fit into a new family. While it deals with difficult topics, such as abandonment and neglect, it does so in a gentle, caring way that invites readers to join T.J. on his emotional journey without being overwhelmed.

I read the parts of this book relating to Patagonia in southern Chile while I was traveling in this region. I found Darwin's observations fascinating, particularly concerning the differences in climate, fauna and animals between this area and areas, such as Dublin, of comparable latitude from the North Pole as southern Chile is from the South Pole. It is also amazing that Darwin was in Chile during a major volanic eruption, earthquake and tsunami.
i cried a lot at the end. it really is a sweet book.
I know it's meant for teens, but I really enjoyed this! It was an easy, fun read, and a cute love story and then things got really intense at the end. I can't wait to read the rest! :-)

I realize we are not dealing with Gone with the Wind here. I was intrigued by the first book and genuinely enjoyed the 2nd and 3rd. The 4th is messed up because it breaks the rules set up in the first book and goe son forever. I eagerly wait for the Bard Senior Project that more succinctly explains why this series is bad for girls self esteem and the implications for society at large. Oh and Team Jacob. Yup I said it. I am all for reading -hopefully in a few years the people who love this book so much now will see it as the equivalent of when I purchased forever your girl by paula abdul in 1989.
Wow. My mind ... is kind of blown. Scratch that, it is blown. Holy. Fucking. Shit. In the beginning, I was torn between giving this 4 or 5 stars, but by the third volume I knew it could only be 5 because this is amazing. "Promethea." An imaginary fictional character who manifests in reality through the artists and writers that tell her story. Obviously, the name's a feminine version of Prometheus, which means "forethought"... which means "imagination". [...:] Imagination... tumbling, spinning... is the light that guides humanity into its future." Basically, this is the story of a college girl called Sophie Bangs who takes on the persona of Promethea and as a result of this has to deal with Promethea's enemies, friends and the end of the world. The incredible thing about this is that while I loved the first volume, I had no idea where this was going when I read it the first time (or the second time). It was like I was going on a journey, and I expected it to be interesting, but I didn't think it'd be like this. Which would be better than interesting. Alan Moore is one of those few, gifted writers who can make you see familiar things, stories, in a completely different way and he can open your eyes to something you've just never seen before. And because he's Alan Moore, it's mystic and psychedelic and just kind of weird, but WHOA. Seriously. This was an amazing read, but apart from the writing the artwork is just. God. Incredible. I read the first volume of Promethea back in 2008, so obviously I'd encountered J.H. Williams III's art before seeing it in Detective Comics, but while I was amazed at the art in this book even back then, I didn't fall in love with it until seeing it in Detective Comics this year (he is part of the reason I love Batwoman as much as I do). But looking at it now - it's brilliant. Absolutely brilliant and fitting and I think I have to look at it again and again and again. And again. And I desperately need the Absolute Edition of this. The experience of reading the very last issue was very fitting because I had the same feeling of "hmhm, this is interesting, oh, cool, holy shit! I'm not quite sure what's going on but hm, oh, oh, OH MY GOD I DID NOT SEE THIS. This is how it connects." All one. <3
This is just one of those picture books that I immediately fell in love with! The "board book" like touch-and-feel, pull-the-tab format is great for little kids who want to have an interactive experience with a book. The photographs of dogs capture some great doggy personalities.

Maybe even 4.5 stars. I think Jeannette Walls is a masterful storyteller. I felt like I was sitting across the table from Lily Casey, watching her facial expressions and listening to her fascinating story. The voice was so authentic and full of endearing chutzpah. I think sometimes I'm especially drawn to literary characters who are nothing like me, and this was certainly the case here. My life is painfully boring in comparison, but also imbued with security and serenity which forever eluded Lily (or rather, she was the elusive one). I loved reading about her adventures and reading this book makes me want to revisit The Glass Castle.
House on Mango Street Sandra Cisneros 110pp. ISBN: 0679734775 The House on Mango Street is about Esperanza not wanting to be part of her run down neighborhood and the low expectations the world let alone her society has for her. This book is all about Esperanza finding her own identity and what she has to do so that she can get out of her neighborhood and not live a life like her mother and father. Esperanza is a girl who just wants to be accepted and have a life that other people have. For example to not have to shop at a junk store and to also not to have to go home for lunch while all the other students in her school stay there amd eat at the canteen. Esperanza is a girl who wants to get away from the segregation and the low expectations that are given to her and the whole spanish society. Esperanza is a self determined girl who wants to be able to enjoy the riches of life and not have to live up to the low epectations that the rest of the spanish society follows. She wants to be the one who breaks out and live a great life with a bright future. But she knows that she can't forget where she came from and lose the identity that was given to her by the society and the world. Sandra Cisneros did a good job showing how young children who have a rough life keep the faith or hope of possibly escaping the rough life when they get older. Cisneros did a good job by showing this through Esperanza.
