This is a wonderfully rich series of mysteries that takes place during WWII. I've never (thankfully) been in combat, but these books give a feeling of what it must have been like. My only quibble with this particular book is that it ends with a bit too many loose ends.

I would like to start by saying I am a humongous Wire fan. This book is just okay. I have heard that the 33 1/3 books are very inconsistent, and I do think this is one of the better models for writing about an album (Neate actually conducted interviews with the band members and producer and was fortunately able to come up with a lot of unknown information about the recording sessions, songs, etc). This certainly is better than the "let me tell you what this album means to me" 33 1/3 books. Except the Master of Reality one, which cannot be beat. This is a good book for the Wire fan, and is a good book about the album but not a great one. SPOILER ALERT: Bruce Gilbert apparently left the current incarnation of Wire due in some part to the revamped credits on the reissue of Pink Flag which list specific songwriting credits... kind of lame...
this book was amazing! it tied together all the ellis novels into this nonfiction/fiction twist and it fucking made me shiver in my jeans. i still don't know whether or not to believe that these things really happen to mr. ellis.

The only part i found mildly entertaining about this book was that the pygmy dudes liked breast implants.

While the plot was intriguing and certainly kept me reading, I found the main character very frustrating. Dashner clearly wants readers to like Thomas, but more often than not I found myself rolling my eyes at him. Thomas is a Mary Sue and I found that I couldn't relate to him. The only characters I grew to like (eg. Chuck) were demeaned or labelled 'annoying' in Thomas' eyes. Superiority complex much? I won't be reading the sequel.

I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was better than the first. Taro and Lee are interesting characters and I like how their relationship is developing. This series has a unique world and I'm looking forward to the next.

This was a really interesting book, although I occasionally found the author's monologues annoying. The author traveled the world asking poor people why they were poor. Their responses, along with glimpses into their lives, are the core of the book. When the book focused on the individuals, I found it fascinating. If you are concerned about poverty, than who better to hear from than those who understand it firsthand? The book worked less for me when the author would go off on the occasional existential spiel. But I appreciate his work, and his efforts to try and address a topic that most simply ignore. His personal grappling with his own attitudes and actions was illuminating, and something I admire him for sharing. I don’t know if I would.
