Fascinating setting, compelling narrative style, and interesting, complicated characters. Somehow, though, this book didn't amaze me the way I expected it might, after reading others' reviews. The repetition of characters' names was an odd device that, for me at least, was too distracting/confusing to be totally effective, although I understand what the author was going for. I definitely enjoyed it, and will want to re-read it at some point in the future, but I wish my expectations hadn't been so lofty. Then again, perhaps later in life I'll be able to appreciate this one more fully.

Lyrical and eloquent I expected this to have been written long ago. But it wasn't. As it turns out it was written in 1994. A great tale almost myth like in its telling. I believe there is a true myth regarding the same character. A very quick and easy tale.

Way, way too convoluted. I have to wonder if the creators know what they are doing. Twist upon twist upon twist and it stopped making sense two or three volumes ago. Original characters and copies and copies of their copies and... So far, the only thing I know for sure is that the whole mess was caused by Feywan who wanted to raise someone from their grave. But who or why or how?

GREAT novel that inadvertently describes the Danish resistance in World War II. First got me interested in the subject and when I researched a little more I realized how incredible the resistance was. They stood up to the Nazis--and won!

I LOVED this book until about 35 pages to the end. Prior to those 35 pages, The Van is HILARIOUS and if you've read the two previous novels about the Rabbitte Family, you'll feel as if you're visiting old friends. Then you get to those pages and realize that The Van doesn't have much of a plot. Doyle must have realized this too, because he lays the complications on thick and leaves the Rabbitte Family and their admirers unsatisfied.

Maybe since this was my third dysfunctional family book in a row, I think I was a bit burned out. I think Alice Sebold is a wonderful writer, but the story was a bit grim. I did not have a lot of sympathy for the protaganist. While her frustration was understandable, her behavior was not.

Much better than I remembered it... this is the second time I've read it since my sophomore year in high school, and I enjoyed it much more this time. Can't say too much about it without going into analyzing it. Just a good read. Not as good as Grapes of Wrath.
